Over 80% of SME Naphtha Imports from Middle East... Supply Chain Crisis Deepens
Prolonged Middle East Conflict Intensifies Raw Material Supply Concerns

- •Over 80% of SME naphtha imports are from the Middle East, indicating high supply dependency
- •Prolonged Middle East conflict increases cost burdens through surging shipping fees and extended transportation times
- •Raw material supply concerns raise fears of delivery delays and weakened export competitiveness
Surging Dependence on Middle Eastern Naphtha
It has been confirmed that over 80% of naphtha imported by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is supplied from the Middle East region. Naphtha is a basic raw material for the petrochemical industry and an essential input for manufacturing various products including plastics and chemical fibers.
This high dependence on Middle Eastern sources is directly impacting the raw material procurement of Korean SMEs as political instability in the Middle East region has become prolonged. Companies are facing significantly increased cost burdens due to war-related shipping fee increases and extended transportation times from route diversions.
Concerns Over Weakened Export Competitiveness
As raw material supply becomes unstable, productivity declines and delivery delays may occur, which could ultimately lead to weakened international competitiveness of Korean SMEs. The management difficulties of SMEs dependent on petrochemical product exports are expected to intensify.
While the industry is exploring countermeasures such as supply source diversification, securing stockpiles, and strengthening domestic production capacity, short-term solutions remain difficult. Government policies to stabilize raw material supply and support for export market diversification are urgently needed.
