ASEAN's Two Major Islamic Nations in Urgent Meeting
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held emergency talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to discuss response measures to the prolonged Middle East war. Indonesia, home to the world's largest Muslim population, and Malaysia, where Islam is the state religion, have expressed strong concerns over the Palestinian crisis.
The meeting took place in Jakarta, where the two leaders intensively discussed joint response measures to resolve the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East and restore peace. The two countries, major Islamic nations within ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), have consistently maintained a position of solidarity on the Palestinian issue.
Seeking Strengthened Regional Security Cooperation
Both nations expressed concerns about the impact of the prolonged Middle East war on global supply chains and energy security, and reportedly agreed on the necessity of a collective ASEAN response. They also discussed expanding humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people as Islamic nations.
Both Indonesia and Malaysia recognize Palestine as an independent state and have not established official diplomatic relations with Israel. This meeting is interpreted as a diplomatic move to minimize the regional spillover effects of the Middle East crisis and strengthen solidarity among Muslim nations.
