Essential Goods Supply Stability as Top Priority
Prime Minister Kim Min-seok stated on the 29th that "memories of the mask and urea crises are vivid" and pledged preemptive measures against disruptions in essential goods supply amid the economic crisis caused by the Middle East war. At an economic security meeting held at the Government Complex-Seoul, PM Kim emphasized that "one of the top priorities is ensuring stable supply of essential goods for citizens."
Preemptive Response Learning from Past Crises
PM Kim referenced the chaos during the COVID-19 mask shortage and the 2021 urea crisis, presenting a policy to establish a preemptive response system against logistics disruptions and raw material price increases due to Middle East instability. The government is reportedly pushing to diversify supply chains and expand reserves of energy resources and raw materials for essential goods imported from the Middle East region.
The government is inspecting inventory status of major essential goods and securing alternative suppliers in preparation for a prolonged Middle East conflict, operating a joint monitoring system across relevant ministries.
