‘Happiness’ settled in the middle of the city

A new landmark has appeared in Huashan Greenland, Shanghai, China. ‘Xi Bridge’, designed by HCCH Studio, means ‘Bridge of Happiness’ in Korean. This bridge lightly spans a small stream that runs through the park and blends naturally into the surrounding trees.

Infrastructure and place of ritual

The city bridge is not just a pedestrian passage. It serves as a barrier-free access leading from the city street to the park's central lawn, while also functioning as a small-scale ceremonial space within the park. HCCH Studio, which was in charge of the design, defined this structure as 'an infrastructure and a place of ritual.' The act of crossing the bridge itself was intended to be a symbolic experience that transitions from daily life to nature and from the city to relaxation.

A new signature of Shanghai's urban green space

Volcanic green space is a valuable green space in downtown Shanghai and has been loved as a resting place for citizens. With the advent of Shigyo, this space went beyond a simple promenade and took on the aspect of public architecture with a sense of place. The curve of the bridge that flows smoothly between the trees is evaluated as adding a modern formative beauty while respecting the natural topography.
