Major Train Accident in Córdoba, Spain: 40 Dead
On January 19 (local time), high-speed trains operated by Iryo and Alvia collided in Adamuz, Córdoba region of Spain, killing at least 40 people and injuring 152. Among the injured, 12 are receiving treatment in intensive care units (ICU). Spanish authorities stated that "the death toll is not final" and search operations for missing persons continue.
So far, 43 missing person reports have been filed, and the forensic institute has received 37 bodies, completing autopsies on 23 cases. At the scene, rescue operations are proceeding simultaneously with investigations to determine the cause of the accident.
Rail Damage Confirmed: "Unclear if Cause or Result"
Óscar Puente, Spain's Minister of Transport, revealed in a January 21 interview with radio station SER that "very significant damage was found on the right rail where the Iryo train passed." Multiple cracks were confirmed over approximately 200 meters from the accident site, with particularly large damage showing "traces of tremendous force" at the presumed derailment point.
Minister Puente stated, "We cannot yet determine whether this damage is the cause of the accident or a result of the collision," adding that "we have not yet secured definitive evidence to identify the accident's cause." However, he noted that clear impact marks from the sixth car onward confirm that the two trains did collide.
Low Probability of Train Defect, Focus on Infrastructure Inspection
Minister Puente explained that "the probability of a defect in the train itself is very low because a regular inspection was conducted three days before the accident." Instead, the focus is on infrastructure aspects, though he acknowledged investigative challenges: "This section is a sufficiently new route, making it difficult to see as the cause, but it also has sufficient operational history, lowering the possibility of initial defects."
Spain's Railway Safety Authority (CIAF) and the Ministry of Justice are currently conducting technical investigations to determine the cause of the accident. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez promised to "definitely uncover the cause of this tragedy."
Survivor Testimony: "Feeling Almost Ashamed to Be Unharmed"
Alejandro Alcolea, who survived the accident, said he feels "a kind of guilt," explaining, "I feel ashamed that I can return to normal life when they remained there." Alcolea, a physical education teacher from Móstoles near Madrid, added that he feels "almost shame for surviving without a scratch."
At the Poniente Sur civic center in Córdoba, families of the missing have been gathering for three days awaiting news. Some families have received tragic news through forensic identification results, and a mourning atmosphere has formed in Aljaraque, Huelva, for a family of four who died in the accident.
Spanish Railway Safety Under Scrutiny Again
This accident is likely to be recorded as Spain's worst railway disaster since the 2013 Santiago de Compostela train derailment (79 deaths). While Spain has one of Europe's most extensive high-speed rail networks (AVE), this accident is expected to increase pressure for a review of infrastructure safety inspection systems.
Authorities have completely suspended operations on the accident route and ordered emergency inspections of high-speed rail tracks nationwide. The final accident cause announcement is expected to take several months, and Spain's Ministry of Transport has promised a "transparent and thorough investigation."
