OpenAI has published an official usage guide for the 'Projects' feature in ChatGPT. Projects is a workspace tool designed to consolidate chats, files, and custom instructions into a single organized space, targeting users who handle repetitive or long-running tasks.

The traditional ChatGPT experience breaks context once a session ends. Users had to re-enter background information at the start of every new conversation, and chats across different topics piled up in a single undifferentiated list. The Projects feature addresses this structurally.

What Is the Projects Feature?

A project acts as a container that integrates three core elements.

Organized Chats: Related conversations are grouped under a single project. Topics like 'Marketing Campaign,' 'Code Review,' or 'Thesis Writing' can each have their own project, making it easy to find and continue prior conversations.

File Uploads and Persistent References: Documents, spreadsheets, and images uploaded to a project are available across all chats within that project—no need to re-attach files every session.

Per-Project Custom Instructions: Users can set system-level instructions on a per-project basis. Rules like 'always respond in English' or 'use Python for all code examples' apply automatically to every chat in that project, once set.
