Plastic Waste Reimagined as Ocean-Inspired Sculpture

Discarded plastic has found new life as sculptural accessories evoking coral and marine organisms. 'Rushera,' a collaborative series developed by design studio Object with Name and material manufacturer Plastic Bakery, is crafted entirely from 100% recycled plastic. The project is currently on permanent display in Seoul, documenting the full journey from raw material processing to finished object.

Why This Project Stands Out

Rushera is not a simple upcycling exercise. Its core proposition is the transformation of plastic's inherent unpredictability from a flaw into a design parameter. Taking the relationship between marine environments and plastic debris as its narrative starting point, the project translates the paradoxical connection between synthetic waste and natural form into a sculptural language.

The irregular geometries and layered textures deliberately reference the visual characteristics of coral and marine life while remaining grounded in the physical properties of recycled plastic. Industry reports note that the work redefines the potential of waste materials while posing critical questions about industrial production methods.

The Aesthetics of Melting, Casting, and Cooling

Rushera's fabrication process centers on three stages: melting, casting, and forming. By controlling temperature, pressure, and cooling rates, the designers manipulate the material's surface grain and internal structure. The unpredictable patterns that emerge are preserved rather than eliminated, becoming the defining identity of each piece — no two objects are identical.

For the first collection, a strategy called 'object hacking' serves as the core methodology. Existing mass-produced items, including furniture components, are used as bases and modified through the addition of newly formed plastic elements. This approach creates a dialogue between standardized industrial products and reprocessed material, altering both function and perception through selective intervention.

Sustainable Design's Evolving Frontier

Since the 2010s, as the environmental crisis became increasingly visible, sustainable design emerged as a central theme in the design world. Early efforts amounted to little more than incorporating recycled materials, but by the 2020s the field had evolved toward placing the material's inherent properties and production process at the center of the design itself. Rushera extends this trajectory — by converting the 'imperfections' of recycled plastic into aesthetic assets, it represents a meaningful step forward in this ongoing conversation.
