Europe's First Carbon Fiber Museum Opens in Italy
MAE Museum Illuminates History of Acrylic and Carbon Fiber

- •Europe's first carbon fiber museum, MAE Museum, has opened in Fiorenzuola d'Arda, Italy.
- •MAE SpA preserves a unique global industrial heritage by integrating acrylic fiber technology archives from major Italian companies.
- •Ferrari designer Flavio Manzoni presented carbon fiber artworks, attempting a fusion of art and technology.
Transforming Industrial Heritage into Cultural Space
Europe's first carbon fiber museum, MAE Museum, has opened in Fiorenzuola d'Arda, Italy. Established under the leadership of Marco Rovellini, Chairman of international company MAE SpA, and Paola Rovellini, CFO, this museum is the world's only space dedicated to illuminating the history of acrylic fiber, its predecessors, and the transformation process into carbon fiber.
The architecture was designed by CRA–Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota, conceived to function as a cultural hub for the community and nation beyond a simple exhibition space.
Corporate Archives Become National Assets
As MAE SpA acquired acrylic fiber-related technology archives developed by major Italian companies including Montefibre, SNIA, and ENI, it now manages the entire technical heritage of Italy's accumulated fiber industry. This is recognized as a unique technical asset worldwide, and the MAE Museum serves to preserve this industrial heritage and make it accessible to the public.
The museum is planning regular seminars and discussions through partnerships with companies, schools, and universities. It promotes science popularization and cultural discourse, with particular emphasis on educational programs for the next generation.
Opening Ceremony and Attendees
The opening ceremony was attended by key government figures including Italian Minister of Tourism Daniela Santanché, Chairman of the House Culture Committee Federico Mollicone, and Attorney Amedeo Teti representing the Ministry of Industry. Local representatives included Fiorenzuola d'Arda Mayor Romeo Gandolfi and Piacenza Industrial Federation President Nicola Parenti.
The dialogue preceding the tour included MAE SpA Chairman Marco Rovellini, architect Andrea Cassi from CRA (with Carlo Ratti participating via video), MAE Museum Director Paola Rovellini, Ferrari Chief Designer Flavio Manzoni, and Museimpresa President Antonio Calabrò.
Flavio Manzoni presented his 'SpeedForm' work made from carbon fiber for the MAE Museum. This piece drew attention as an artistic attempt combining Ferrari's design philosophy with the possibilities of carbon fiber.
From Space to Bicycles
The opening ceremony was attended by Tommaso Ghidini of the European Space Agency (ESA) as honorary president of the MAE Museum, and Andrea Resca of the Emilia-Romagna Aerospace Forum also delivered congratulatory remarks. This symbolically demonstrates the central position that carbon fiber occupies in the aerospace industry.
Legendary American cyclist Greg LeMond also attended. LeMond is recognized as having contributed to the popularization of carbon fiber technology by winning the Tour de France in the late 1980s using a bicycle with a carbon fiber frame.
From Past to Future [AI Analysis]
The opening of the MAE Museum is likely to present a new model for transforming industrial heritage into cultural assets beyond a simple museum opening. Italy was a leader in the chemical fiber industry in the mid-20th century, but many companies disappeared due to global competition and industrial structural changes. MAE SpA's integration and public presentation of their technical archives is evaluated as a case of sublimating industrial decline into cultural memory.
Carbon fiber is currently a core material in advanced industries such as aerospace, automotive, and sports equipment. However, its origin in acrylic fiber is an unfamiliar history to the public. The MAE Museum is expected to bridge this gap through educational programs and corporate collaborations, establishing itself as a space that provides inspiration to the next generation of engineers and designers.
In particular, the participation of global companies and institutions such as Ferrari and ESA suggests the museum's potential to grow beyond a simple local cultural facility into a forum for international technological discourse.
