A Quiet Adjustment, A Loud Statement

Nico Hoerner's mechanical tweak was never meant to turn heads in the batting cage. But the results have been impossible to ignore. The Chicago Cubs second baseman capped a dominant two-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies with a three-hit, five-RBI performance in an 11-2 blowout on Wednesday, setting a new career high in RBIs for a single game.

Combined with two key hits the night before in a 10-4 victory, Hoerner now owns eight RBIs over the two-game stretch — the most he has ever produced in back-to-back games.

Why It Matters

Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer called Hoerner "a more dangerous hitter" in pregame remarks Wednesday, adding, "He looks fantastic right now — just like the end of last year." Manager Craig Counsell had gone further after Tuesday's win, calling Hoerner "the engine" of the offense.

Through 18 games, Hoerner's slash line sits at .324/.410/.507, with nine extra-base hits and 23 total hits. It's an extension of a torrid run that began last September: since Sept. 1, 2025, Hoerner leads the majors in regular-season hits with 58, having batted .333 over the final month of last season and .419 across eight playoff games.

The Mechanics Behind the Numbers

Assistant hitting coach John Mallee pinpoints the change: Hoerner used to initiate his swing by rotating his torso slightly before his hips, a sequencing flaw that created a steep, downward bat path. By reversing the order — hips first — Hoerner has been able to stay behind the ball longer and match the pitch plane more efficiently.

The ground-ball rate tells the story in numbers. From 2021–23 it ranged between 46–50%; in 2024–25 it sat around 44–45%. This season it has dropped to 34.5%, reflecting a swing better suited to generating line drives and air contact.

"He's learning how to rotate better and in a proper sequence," Mallee said, "which is allowing him to stay behind the ball and take the steepness out of his swing."

Hoerner himself downplayed the scope of the change. "I wouldn't call it a big mechanics revamp," he said. "I'm just embracing my skill set well."

A Platform for the Team

Hoerner's production provided a comfortable cushion for lefty Shota Imanaga, who spun six innings of one-run ball with 11 strikeouts and 26 swing-and-misses — tying a Cubs single-game record in the pitch-tracking era (since 2008).
