Africa's First Dedicated Goethe-Institut Building Opens Its Doors

From April 16 to 18, 2026, the Goethe-Institut's new headquarters in Dakar, Senegal, is celebrating its official inauguration. As the first purpose-built Goethe-Institut on the African continent, the facility was designed by Kéré Architecture, led by Burkinabé architect Francis Kéré, winner of the 2022 Pritzker Prize. Construction began in February 2022, and after roughly four years, the building now stands as a new cultural hub connecting Germany, Senegal, and West Africa.

Why This Building Matters

Although the Goethe-Institut has been present in Senegal since 1978, this new structure goes far beyond a simple office space. Conceived as 'a platform for exchange, innovation, and sustainable cooperation,' the building marks a historic first for the continent and signals Germany's long-term commitment to supporting the creative industries and intellectual exchange in West Africa.

The 2,700-square-meter site is located near the Atlantic Ocean, Cheikh Anta Diop University, and the Léopold Sédar Senghor Museum, placing it at the heart of Dakar's academic and artistic community.

Local Materials, Traditional Craft

The building was constructed using locally sourced laterite bricks and bioclimatic design principles — a hallmark of Kéré Architecture's philosophy of combining local identity with innovation. The project involved close collaboration between German engineers from Rebuild.ing, the Dakar-based firm Worofila, and local companies and artisans.

A central baobab tree anchors the two-storey structure, around which multipurpose spaces for learning, creativity, and dialogue are organized. The ground floor houses an auditorium, cafeteria, and a library dedicated to African knowledge. The second floor contains classrooms and offices, while an accessible rooftop provides additional event space.

Francis Kéré and the Legacy of African Architecture

Francis Kéré grew up in the small village of Gando, Burkina Faso, where he developed a deep understanding of community-driven architecture. After studying at the Technical University of Berlin, he returned to design and build his hometown's school, drawing international acclaim. His subsequent projects — from an opera village in Mali to a surgery center in Burkina Faso and stages at the Coachella Music Festival — cemented his reputation as a champion of sustainable, community-centered design. His 2022 Pritzker Prize made him the first African architect to receive the honor.

The Dakar project represents a significant milestone in both architectural and cultural diplomacy, embodying Kéré's philosophy on a West African stage.

Opening Events

A public program including lectures, panel discussions, and guided tours runs from April 16 to 17. The full inauguration period extends through April 18, marking the beginning of the institute's engagement with the broader West African cultural community.
