Poland's Unique Christmas Tradition in Krakow
The 83rd edition of Krakow's traditional nativity scene (Szopka) building contest has concluded. This year's competition saw a record-breaking 238 entries, with winning works currently on display at the Krzysztofory Palace (Pałac Krzysztofory).
Krakow's nativity scenes are completely different from typical Bethlehem stable designs. They must be tower-shaped structures that capture Krakow's distinctive architectural style. Most works recreate the facade of St. Mary's Basilica or other historic churches, establishing themselves as cultural heritage that expresses the city's identity beyond simple religious art.
From 75-Year Veterans to Student Newcomers
Particularly noteworthy in this year's competition is the generational diversity of participants. Zbigniew Grzech received a special award in the medium-sized nativity category, 75 years after his first entry in 1950. Zbigniew Gillert, marking his 53rd participation, placed third in both the small and miniature categories.
Meanwhile, members of the Student Mountain Guide Association (Studenckie Koło Przewodników Górskich) made a successful debut, earning a special award in the large nativity category with their first-ever submission.
Commemorating the 1000th Anniversary of Bolesław the Brave's Coronation
Michał Niezabitowski, director of the Krakow Museum, explained: "This contest provides an answer to what the city of Krakow is and why it exists. A scientific explanation is possible, but so is an artistic answer—how the people living in this city see everything happening here through their spirit, heart, and emotions. The Krakow nativity scene is exactly that."
Many of this year's works were created with the theme of the 1000th anniversary of Bolesław the Brave's (Bolesław Chrobry) coronation. Nativity structures featuring motifs of Poland's first king's crown were included among the winning entries, adding historical significance.
Trend Toward Fewer Large Works, More Miniatures
Organizers noted a recent trend of decreasing large nativity submissions and increasing small and miniature works. Some miniature pieces were crafted so intricately that appreciating their details is difficult without a magnifying glass.
The jury consisted of 21 experts including historians, folklorists, and artists, evaluating works across adult/senior, youth, and 'OFF' categories for those freely departing from tradition.
Major Winners (Adult/Senior Category)
- Large Nativity: Co-winners Marek Markowski & Marek Markowski Jr. and Aleksander Wełna
- Medium Nativity: Filip Fotomajczyk
- Small Nativity: Co-winners Jakub Zawadziński and Andrzej Wróbel
- Miniature: Kamil Proksch and Aleksander Proksch
In the youth category, Paulina Wąsik (ages 12-14) and Krzysztof Haberka (ages 15-17) took first place in their respective age groups. The OFF category was won by the 'Szopkomaniacy' team from Kobierzyn CTZ and Karolina Starostka-Kokoszka.
A Window into Krakow's Cultural Heritage
Paweł Szczepanik, Krakow Mayor's Plenipotentiary for Culture, emphasized the importance of this tradition, stating "national heritage is Krakow heritage."
The current exhibition at Krzysztofory Palace goes beyond a simple craft display—it's a living cultural record showing how city residents interpret and express their identity. Each of the 238 nativity structures is an artwork born at the intersection of Krakow's past and present with each creator's individual perspective.
