Unconscious Gestures, Now Measurable

Tapping a pen during a meeting, rotating a ring out of habit — these overlooked repetitive movements are the foundation of the MELO Bubble Ring. Designed by New York-based product designer Shuting Jiang, the wearable captures unconscious tactile behaviors in real time and translates them into emotional data. The project has received both the iF Design Award and the Red Dot Design Award, drawing international attention to its novel approach to emotional sensing.

Two Sensors, One Feedback Loop

At the core of MELO are two embedded sensors. A force-sensitive resistor (FSR) records pressure and interaction as the wearer presses or rotates the ring. Simultaneously, a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor monitors heart rate variability as a physiological indicator. Data from both sensors is transmitted via Bluetooth to a companion mobile app, which organizes the information into four defined emotional states: overwhelmed, tense, calm, and relaxed.

Crucially, the system requires no deliberate user input. Wearing the ring through a normal day is sufficient for continuous data collection. The app provides real-time feedback alongside suggested responses such as breathing exercises, forming a closed loop between the physical object and the digital interface.

Designed Around a Simple Observation

Jiang's starting point was a straightforward observation: stress manifests in repetitive physical behavior, yet these signals are almost never recorded. She redefined this gap as a design problem and built the ring as an input system that captures behavior passively.

The ring's form reflects this intent. Three interchangeable tactile modules — Wave, Peak, and Dome — allow the ring to accommodate different fidgeting styles. The body is constructed from titanium and medical-grade silicone, selected for durability and skin compatibility during 24-hour wear. The modular design enables component replacement, making long-term use a built-in feature rather than an afterthought.

The piece is currently on exhibit at the Red Dot Design Museum Singapore from October 2025 through October 2026.

A New Direction for Emotional Wearables

MELO positions itself within a broader shift in wearable technology — moving beyond health metrics like step counts and sleep data toward the more subjective terrain of emotional awareness. Rather than asking users to log moods or answer check-ins, the ring derives emotional inference from behavior that is already happening. Jiang, who also serves as a Senior Product Designer at Madhive and as a juror for international design competitions, continues to develop work that bridges physical objects and digital systems.
