115-Year-Old Postal Palace Transforms into 'Palace of Wishes'

Mexico City's Postal Palace (Palacio Postal) undergoes a special transformation every January 5th, becoming the 'Palace of Wishes' (Palacio de los Deseos).

Here, Mexican children submit their final letters to the Three Wise Men (Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar). This year, thousands of families visited the Postal Palace carrying colorful envelopes.

Organized by the Mexican Postal Service (Sepomex), this event is more than just a celebration. It's a cultural project that protects children's imagination, strengthens family bonds, and revives the tradition of handwriting.

Putting Down Smartphones, Picking Up Pens

Inside the Postal Palace, letter-writing workshops for the Three Wise Men are held. Professional staff sit with children to teach them how to write letters properly. Beyond simply requesting toys, children learn how to correctly write sender and recipient information and how to affix stamps.

Instagram creator Soy Maleen shared her experience:

"Do you remember writing letters to the Three Wise Men? I'm going to receive a reply for the first time. The Postal Palace is both a Palace of Wishes and a museum. After writing letters and touring the museum, this has become one of my favorite places in Mexico City. It's full of history and art, and it's beautiful everywhere you look. Sometimes we need time to step away from the city, from the internet, from our phones—to write letters by hand, appreciate things beyond screens, and visit places that inspire us."

Magic for 30 Pesos

Participation is simple. Purchase a New Year's kit sold for 30 pesos (approximately $2), which includes letter paper/envelope and commemorative stamps. After writing your letter, drop it into the 'magic mailboxes' installed inside and outside the building, and the postal service will deliver it specially to the Three Wise Men.

The day's highlight is free photo opportunities with the Three Wise Men. Families can capture 2026 memories with the Three Wise Men using their own phones or cameras.

The Postal Palace Itself is a Work of Art

Visiting the Palace of Wishes offers more than just letter writing. The Postal Palace is an architectural masterpiece with 115 years of history, built in 1907.

Designed through collaboration between Mexican engineer Gonzalo Garita and Italian architect Adamo Boari (designer of the Palacio de Bellas Artes), this building represents the pinnacle of eclectic architecture, blending Isabelline Gothic, Venetian Gothic, and Art Nouveau styles.

Limestone from the Chiluca region, Mexican marble, and ironwork imported from Florence, Italy harmonize together. The recently reopened Postal Museum allows visitors to explore 500 years of Mexican communication history.

Why This Tradition Thrives

In Mexico, Three Kings' Day (January 6th) is as important as Christmas. Children place letters beside their shoes before sleeping the night before, and receive gifts the next morning.

The Postal Palace's 'Palace of Wishes' project does more than simply preserve this tradition. It helps rediscover the value of handwritten letters in the digital age, provides time for families to gather and communicate, and offers an integrated experience of learning national history through architectural heritage.

This year, the Postal Palace's magic mailboxes were filled with thousands of letters, each containing children's pure dreams and warm family memories.
