Summary
  • MLB will allow batters, pitchers, and catchers to challenge ball and strike calls starting in 2026.
  • Each team receives two challenge opportunities per game, which are retained upon success.
  • 2025 Spring Training tests showed a 50% overturn rate with an average of 14 seconds per challenge.

A New Era for Major League Baseball

Major League Baseball (MLB) will introduce a challenge system starting in the 2026 regular season, allowing batters, pitchers, and catchers to directly contest ball and strike calls.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred explained the rationale behind the new system, stating it is "a balanced approach that maintains the essential role of umpires while correcting incorrect calls at critical moments."

How It Works

Only batters, pitchers, and catchers can request a challenge by tapping the top of their head immediately after a call. The pitch trajectory and strike zone captured by 12 cameras installed throughout the stadium are then automatically displayed on the video board.

Each team receives two challenge opportunities per game. If a challenge is successful, the team retains the opportunity, but if it fails, they lose one. Once both challenges are exhausted, no further appeals can be made.

Seattle Mariners pitcher Taylor Saucedo, who experienced the system in the minor leagues this season, offered a positive response: "I was initially opposed, but my thinking changed after experiencing it. It doesn't slow down the game and only takes about 10 seconds."

Spring Training Test Results

During the 2025 Spring Training, players challenged over 1,000 calls. The results showed:

  • Overall overturn rate: approximately 50%
  • Catchers' challenge success rate: 56% (highest)
  • Pitchers' challenge success rate: 41% (lowest)
  • Average additional time per challenge: 14 seconds

MLB has been testing an Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) system in the minor leagues since 2021, and conducted the first major league trial during the 2025 Spring Training and All-Star Game.

Why Now?

MLB has been implementing video replay since 2008, starting with home run calls. However, ball and strike calls have remained the exclusive domain of umpires.

In recent years, as controversies over incorrect calls have increased, demands from players and fans for technological implementation have grown. The fact that a single call can determine the outcome of important games, particularly in the playoffs, has been a driving force for change.

John Stanton, Seattle Mariners owner and chair of MLB's Joint Competition Committee, commented: "We're giving players a tool to correct incorrect calls at critical moments while maintaining the human element of the game and providing fans with new moments of engagement."

Future Outlook [AI Analysis]

The challenge system presents a model of coexistence between umpires and technology. Rather than full automation, this approach respects players' judgment, making it likely to enhance fairness without compromising baseball's inherent nature.

However, a learning period regarding strategic challenge usage will likely be necessary early in the season. Team-specific strategies about when to use challenges and who should request them could influence game outcomes.

Long-term, similar hybrid review systems may spread to other sports. This approach uses technology as a support tool while leaving final decision-making authority with players and officials.
