NASA's SPHEREx Charts the Origins of Water Across the Milky Way

Where Did the Galaxy's Water Come From?
NASA's SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) has completed a detailed map of water ice distribution in Cygnus X, one of the most active star-forming regions in our galaxy. Published April 15, 2026, in The Astrophysical Journal, the study provides strong observational support for a long-standing hypothesis about how interstellar ice forms—and opens a new chapter in understanding the cosmic origins of water and life.
Ice Born on Dust
The study's central finding confirms that interstellar ice forms on the surface of dust grains no larger than particles found in candle smoke. Researchers found that the densest concentrations of ice coincide precisely with the densest concentrations of dust. This dust acts as a shield, protecting water molecules from the intense ultraviolet radiation emitted by newborn stars.
SPHEREx visualized water ice signatures in bright blue and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in orange, revealing the internal environment of molecular clouds in unprecedented spatial detail.
The First All-Sky Infrared Ice Hunter
Launched March 11, 2025, SPHEREx can observe the entire sky in 102 colors—each representing a distinct infrared wavelength—capturing unique information about galaxies, stars, and planet-forming regions. While telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope and the retired Spitzer have detected icy molecules in the galaxy before, SPHEREx is the first infrared mission specifically designed to search for these molecules across the entire sky through a large-scale spectral survey. By late 2025, it had completed the first of four planned all-sky infrared maps, charting hundreds of millions of galaxies in 3D.
From Star Birth to Life: Water's Cosmic Journey
The stakes of this research extend far beyond astronomy. The question of where Earth's water came from is inseparable from the question of how life arose. The field has advanced steadily: Spitzer first confirmed icy molecules in nebulae in the 1990s, Herschel partially tracked interstellar water distributions in the 2010s, and JWST captured precise ice spectra in individual nebulae after 2022. SPHEREx now adds a full-sky statistical map to this lineage.
Dust particles coated in ice in star-forming regions eventually become the raw materials for planetary systems. One leading hypothesis holds that rocky planets like Earth acquired their water through the accretion of these ice-coated grains—a scenario this new data supports.
Looking Ahead [Expert Analysis]
SPHEREx aims to complete four all-sky infrared surveys in total. With repeat observations, tracking changes in ice distribution over time across star-forming environments becomes a strong possibility. The dataset, led by Principal Investigator Jamie Bock of Caltech and involving scientists from 13 institutions across the U.S., South Korea, and Taiwan, is freely available to researchers and the public.
As SPHEREx builds a comprehensive map of molecular clouds across the Milky Way, statistically linking interstellar ice distribution to star and planet formation is likely to become feasible—bringing science measurably closer to answering where Earth's oceans came from.
