Pakistan Issues Ultimatum to Afghanistan: 'Choose to Eradicate Terrorism'
19 soldiers killed in counter-terrorism operation... PM: 'Afghanistan must choose between Pakistan and TTP'
- •Pakistan's military suffered 19 fatalities during counter-terrorism operations, with the war on terror continuing
- •Prime Minister Sharif issued an ultimatum to Afghanistan to 'sever ties with TTP'
- •Pakistan has warned of diplomatic and military hardline responses if Afghan territory continues to be used as a terrorist base
Consecutive Losses in Counter-Terrorism Operations
Last week, during an armed militant elimination operation in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region, 19 Pakistani soldiers were killed in action. Security forces were engaged in fierce combat while conducting operations to eliminate militant hideouts, though they also achieved success in neutralizing dozens of terrorists in the process.
According to local media, this operation was part of a broader campaign to eliminate terrorist threats within Pakistani territory. However, the successive military casualties demonstrate that Pakistan continues to pay a high price in its war against terrorism.
Prime Minister Sharif's Hardline Message
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited Bannu on Saturday and issued a clear ultimatum to the Afghan government. He warned that "Afghanistan must choose whether to stand with Pakistan or with the illegal armed group TTP (Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan) that uses Afghan territory to attack Pakistan."
Prime Minister Sharif expressed strong dissatisfaction with the situation where Afghan territory is being used as a terrorist sanctuary. He stated, "We have repeatedly warned Kabul, but no substantive action has been taken," and pointed out that "according to intelligence and military reports, Afghan nationals were directly involved in recent attacks."
More concerningly, evidence has emerged that some elements within Afghan authorities are colluding with terrorists. This suggests active cooperation beyond mere negligence. If this attitude continues, trust between the two nations will inevitably erode further.
Crossroads Between Diplomatic Solutions and Hardline Response
The Pakistani government plans to pursue a balanced yet resolute policy. Prime Minister Sharif announced that he would present a comprehensive counter-terrorism strategy to the federal cabinet. A unified decision at the national level can secure greater legitimacy and operational clarity.
Diplomatic efforts will also continue. Demanding that Kabul eliminate armed groups is a legitimate right. However, if repeated requests are ignored and attacks continue, Pakistan will have no choice but to readjust its approach, including accelerating the safe and dignified repatriation of Afghan nationals.
Pakistan has drawn a clear red line. If Afghan territory continues to be used as a launching pad for attacks, Pakistani security forces will take additional measures. This is interpreted as meaning that military options will not be ruled out beyond diplomatic pressure.
Impact on South Korea
Instability in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region also has indirect effects on South Korea. First, it could lead to the strengthening of global terrorism networks. This region has historically been a base for international terrorist organizations, and failure to stabilize it could deteriorate the security environment across the Middle East and Central Asia.
Second, it affects the safety of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project in which South Korea has invested. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is one of the major transit regions for CPEC, and instability in this area could become a variable in South Korean companies' South Asia expansion strategies.
Third, there is the potential for expansion of the refugee problem. If Pakistan accelerates the repatriation of Afghan refugees, a humanitarian crisis could occur, requiring an international response. The South Korean government may also need to clarify its position on humanitarian assistance and refugee issues.
