Summary
  • RFK Jr. will hold a rally in Harrisburg on the 21st to promote new nutrition guidelines.
  • The new guidelines elevate meat and vegetables to priority foods and abandon low-fat policies.
  • Civic groups have announced a protest at the Capitol at the same time, calling the policies unscientific.

Federal Nutrition Standards Overhauled After 36 Years

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) will hold a rally at the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg on the 21st local time. This promotional event for the new federal nutrition standards announced by the White House earlier this month will proceed under the slogan "Make America Healthy Again."

The Cumberland County Republican Party stated that the rally will open at 10 a.m. and begin around 11 a.m., and that while space inside the Capitol Rotunda is limited, the general public may enter.

Food Pyramid Structure Reorganized

RFK Jr. unveiled the new food pyramid at a White House press conference earlier this month. Unlike previous guidelines, the structure places vegetables and meat at the top and moves whole grains to the bottom.

"Protein and healthy fats are essential nutrients that have been unfairly suppressed in previous guidelines. We are ending the war on saturated fat." Secretary Kennedy made this statement while officially abandoning the previous low-fat diet-centered policy.

The 2020-2025 federal Dietary Guidelines for Americans adopted the "MyPlate" model, recommending that plates consist of 50% fruits and vegetables and 50% protein and grains. The new guidelines have completely readjusted these ratios.

Medical Community and Civic Groups Push Back

The Pennsylvania Policy Center criticized RFK Jr.'s policies in a statement. The statement pointed to mass layoffs at the Department of Health and Human Services and changes to vaccination recommendations as problematic.

The PA 10th District Network plans to hold a protest on the Capitol steps from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the same day. The group asked participants to prepare picket signs and hand warmers, stating that some banners will be provided on-site.

"We trust scientific evidence. We oppose RFK's unscientific policies that are harmful to the health of children and the elderly in particular. His stance on traditional medical practices overall is dangerous." The network stated this in a press release.

This rally is expected to reignite debate over the scientific basis of dietary guidelines between the nutrition science community and political circles.
