Suwon City Breaks Ground on Tapdong Innovation Valley, Launches Ring-Shaped Advanced Cluster
Summary
  • Suwon City officially launched the 267,000㎡ Tapdong Innovation Valley with a groundbreaking ceremony for an advanced industrial complex.
  • The city plans to build a ring-shaped advanced cluster connecting the entire city, centered on Tapdong and R&D Science Park.
  • Suwon aims to develop into Korea's representative research city by pursuing Free Economic Zone designation covering 3.3 million㎡.

Suwon City Begins Reshaping Future Industrial Landscape

Gyeonggi Province's Suwon Special City held a groundbreaking ceremony on the 19th for the 'Tapdong Innovation Valley' in the Tapdong area of Gwonseon-gu, officially launching construction of an advanced industrial complex. The 267,000㎡ (approximately 80,000 pyeong) complex will undergo site development for approximately three years, targeting completion in July 2029.

Tapdong Innovation Valley consists of 11 zones, including approximately 170,000㎡ of dedicated business facilities for high-tech companies in AI (artificial intelligence), semiconductors, biotechnology, and robotics. The sale price has been set at 9 to 10 million won per pyeong.

Building a City-Wide Advanced Industrial Belt

This groundbreaking marks the first phase of Suwon City's 'Ring-Shaped Advanced Science Innovation Cluster' initiative. Suwon City plans to connect North Suwon Techno Valley, Uman Techno Valley, and Maetan-Woncheon Industrial Complex around the central axis of Tapdong Innovation Valley and R&D Science Park, creating an advanced industrial belt spanning the entire city.

Notably, on the 18th, Suwon City designated 350,000㎡ in the Ipbuk-dong area of Gwonseon-gu as an urban development zone, officially launching the 'R&D Science Park Development Project.' This represents a significant achievement 14 years after the project's conception, particularly considering the site had been restricted as a Green Belt area, causing long-term implementation challenges.

R&D Science Park is located approximately 1.2km from Sungkyunkwan University Station on National Rail Line 1 and about 1.4km from the planned Guun Station on the Shinbundang Line Gwanggyo-Homaesil extension, offering excellent transportation accessibility. Synergies with the nearby Sungkyunkwan University Natural Sciences Campus through industry-academia-research collaboration are also anticipated.

Pursuing Free Economic Zone Designation to Maximize Synergy

Based on these complexes, Suwon City is pursuing designation as a Free Economic Zone covering approximately 3.3 million㎡ (about 1 million pyeong). The strategy is to establish an innovation ecosystem that attracts advanced technology companies and research institutions.

Suwon Mayor Lee Jae-jun stated, "Tapdong Innovation Valley is the first puzzle piece in transforming Suwon's future industrial landscape," adding, "We will create an innovation ecosystem where high-tech companies and research institutions converge, growing Suwon into Korea's representative research city."

Suwon City's project goes beyond simple industrial complex development, representing part of a long-term strategy to reorganize the entire city as an advanced R&D hub. R&D Science Park will proceed with follow-up procedures including compensation planning and implementation plan approval, targeting a 2027 construction start.
