Trump declared, 'We should call it the great, big, beautiful tax cut bill, because it's tremendous amounts of money.' He was referring to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law on July 4, 2025.

What the Law Actually Does

The legislation fulfills parts of Trump's 2024 campaign promises: a tax break on tipped income, deductions on overtime pay, benefits for Social Security recipients, and expanded 529 education savings accounts.

Depending on the measure used, the 2025 tax cuts rank either third or sixth largest since 1980 — not the biggest in U.S. history, as Trump has repeatedly claimed.

Tips Tax Break: Who Qualifies and How Much?

The law exempts some tipped income from taxes through 2028. According to the Yale Budget Lab, only about 2.5% of workers hold tipped jobs — around 5% among the bottom quarter of earners.

The White House says over 5.5 million Americans have benefited, with an average deduction of $7,100. The Cato Institute's Adam Michel says the figure aligns with estimates from when the law passed.

However, Trump's claims went further. He suggested Simmons saved $11,000 thanks to the tax bill. Simmons later clarified that $11,000 was the amount she earned in tips — not her tax savings, which she called a private matter.

Trump vowed to 'end all taxes on overtime.' The law moves in that direction but expires in 2028 and applies only to workers covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act. Many supervisory employees, professionals, self-employed workers, and independent contractors don't qualify.
