Artemis 2 Heat Shield Passes Reentry Test, Allaying Years of Concern
NASA's decision to adjust reentry angle instead of redesigning the shield paid off after Artemis 1's scarring

Crew Inspected the Shield Moments After Splashdown
The Orion capsule of Artemis 2 splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean on April 10, effectively putting to rest the most pressing concern about the mission: the performance of its heat shield. The shield—named "Integrity" by the crew—endured reentry temperatures of roughly 2,800°C (5,000°F) without the severe damage that had rattled the spaceflight community ahead of the flight.
Artemis 2 commander Reid Wiseman inspected the capsule alongside his crewmates shortly after splashdown. "There was a little bit of char loss on the shoulder, where the heat shield meets the structure," he said, "but the bottom looked wonderful to us. It looked great." He described the return journey as "a very smooth ride."
The crew consisted of NASA astronauts Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
Why This Result Matters
The achievement carries extra weight because of what happened with Artemis 1 in late 2022. That uncrewed mission to lunar orbit returned successfully, but Orion's 5-meter heat shield—the largest of its kind ever flown—sustained more damage than anticipated during reentry. Capsules returning from the Moon enter the atmosphere at far greater speeds than low-orbit missions, placing an outsized burden on the thermal protection system.
After extensive analysis, NASA chose to retain the same heat shield design for Artemis 2 rather than overhaul it—a decision that drew sharp criticism from parts of the spaceflight community. Instead, engineers modified the reentry trajectory, steepening the angle of approach to reduce the time the capsule spent in the most extreme temperature regimes. The Artemis 2 result suggests that adjustment was the right call.
The Last Flight for This Shield Design
Artemis 2 marks the final mission for the Integrity design. NASA has stated it will introduce a new heat shield for future Artemis flights. The next mission, Artemis 3, will remain in Earth orbit to test docking procedures between Orion and privately developed lunar landers—SpaceX's Starship and Blue Origin's Blue Moon. The full lunar landing comes with Artemis 4, which will put astronauts near the Moon's south pole and bring them home aboard Orion, once again testing the limits of whatever heat shield is chosen.
Wiseman's inspection remains a preliminary assessment. NASA will conduct formal analysis of the shield's performance data over the coming weeks and months.
