Large-Scale Conventions Unfold in Forest Resorts

Connecticut is gaining attention as a corporate event and incentive program destination in the eastern United States. Thanks to its strategic location between New York City and Boston, combined with diverse MICE facilities ranging from large-scale casino resorts to urban cultural spaces, the state is becoming a preferred choice for event planners.

Two major casino resorts are located in eastern Connecticut. These facilities, situated an hour's drive from both Hartford Bradley International Airport and Providence T.F. Green International Airport, are praised for their excellent accessibility while being nestled in lush deciduous forests.

Mohegan Sun Achieves 70% Return Rate

Mohegan Sun, operated by the federally recognized Mohegan Tribe, celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. The resort is one of the largest casinos in the United States by gaming space and one of the largest hotel-based convention facilities in the Northeast.

Mohegan Sun boasts 230,000 square feet (approximately 21,368 square meters) of event space and over 1,600 guest rooms. According to Kim Simone, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, bookings for corporate and association national conventions have surged recently, with a return rate reaching 70%.

"Six groups that conducted site visits in late 2025 signed contracts consecutively. We're a different type of destination than cities, but we have the advantage of being easily accessible and offering everything on-site," Simone explained.

Recently, Summer Shack restaurant, Lansdowne Irish Pub, and Avalon nightclub collaborated to create a complex space capable of hosting receptions for up to 1,600 people. Operating under the same liquor license and within walking distance, the venue can accommodate diverse themed events from New England-style lobster dinners to pub sing-alongs and disco parties.

Mohegan Sun operates over 12 full-service restaurants including Todd English's Tuscany, Michael Jordan's Steakhouse, and Beauty & Essex, along with 15 private dining rooms.

Two Convention Centers and a 10,000-Seat Arena

Mohegan Sun's convention facilities are divided into two locations. The Earth Expo & Convention Center features a divisible 20,000-square-foot ballroom, 15 breakout rooms, and a column-free 125,000-square-foot exhibit hall. This exhibit space, which can be carpeted and decorated, hosted the Miss America pageant in 2023.

The Sky Convention Center includes a 38,000-square-foot ballroom divisible into 10 sections and 20 breakout rooms. Additionally, the 10,000-seat Mohegan Sun Arena attracts national concerts and serves as the home venue for the WNBA's Connecticut Sun from May through September.

Foxwoods Resort: 1,948 Rooms and 47,000-Square-Foot Ballroom

Located 13 kilometers east of Mohegan Sun is Foxwoods Resort Casino. Owned and operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, this resort features a total of 1,948 guest rooms across two large towers and the adjacent Great Cedar Hotel.

Foxwoods' event space includes a 47,000-square-foot ballroom divisible into eight sections, a 15,000-square-foot ballroom that can be divided into 11 sections, and approximately 20 dedicated breakout rooms. Outdoor facilities include a 13,000-square-foot terrace and lawn space.

Additional event venues include the 4,000-seat Premier Theater, the 1,400-seat Great Cedar Showroom, and High Rollers Luxury Lanes and Sports Lounge, which can accommodate up to 800 guests.

Foxwoods operates five upscale restaurants including Cedars Steaks and Oysters, Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen, and Momosan by Morimoto. The resort features the Norwich Spa on-site, and the 36-hole Lake of Isles Golf Club is located 1.6 kilometers away. The golf club features a two-story lakeside clubhouse with a glass-walled ballroom that can host formal dinners for 200 guests.
