Largest Dominican Diaspora Sports Festival Opens

New York is hosting the largest multi-sport games in Dominican diaspora community history. The Juan Pablo Duarte New York Games 2025 (Juegos Deportivos Juan Pablo Duarte NY 2025) will be held starting August 14 at various venues throughout New York City, including the Apex Center at Lehman College in the Bronx.

Roberto Rojas, the tournament director, stated, "This event will mark a milestone in Dominican sports history abroad," adding that "we have prepared a sports festival celebrating Dominican identity."

The opening ceremony will be presided over by Kelvin Cruz, Minister of Sports and Recreation of the Dominican Republic, with active support from Jesús Vásquez, Dominican Consul General in New York.

20 Sports, 2,300 Athletes Convene

Competitions will take place in over 20 sports including track and field, chess, basketball, baseball, billiards, bowling, cycling, dominoes, judo, soccer, taekwondo, karate, tennis, table tennis, softball, volleyball, and archery.

Approximately 2,300 athletes will participate, gathering from Dominican communities throughout the Eastern United States, including New York, Rhode Island, Lawrence, and Boston. They will compete fiercely for gold, silver, and bronze medals.

The games are dedicated to Dominican baseball legends Luicín Mejía and Meris de Oleo.

Collaboration Between Dominican Government and New York Community

This event is organized with official support from the Dominican Republic government and under the auspices of the Dominican Sports Union of New York (Unión Deportiva Dominicana NY).

Consul General Vásquez emphasized the importance of promoting diaspora sports, stating, "Shortly after arriving in New York, I met with sports leaders and the concept for this tournament began."

Prior to the games, a torch relay was held in Manhattan last weekend. Dozens of Dominican athletes marched through New York streets, previewing the excitement to come.

Evaristo Madrigal, president of the Dominican Sports Union of New York, and Pedro Pablo Pérez, technical director, expressed their anticipation: "The passionate enthusiasm of New York's Dominican community will burst forth through this tournament."

A New Chapter in Diaspora Sports

This tournament is positioned to be more than just a sporting event—it is a cultural event strengthening the identity and solidarity of overseas Dominicans. By hosting the largest self-organized multi-sport games among Latin communities in the United States, it will serve as an opportunity to demonstrate the organizational capacity and cultural pride of the Dominican diaspora.
