New Missing Persons Alert System 'Emerald Alert' Now Active
The Detroit Police Department (DPD) launched a new alert system called Emerald Alert this Monday to aid in the search for missing persons. This system was designed to provide rapid information to citizens in missing person cases that do not meet the criteria for traditional Amber Alerts.
Police can activate Emerald Alerts when searching for missing persons suspected of being involved in criminal activity or who require special protection. Alerts will be transmitted through Detroit's integrated alert platform, the 'Detroit Alerts 365' system.
While Amber Alerts are primarily limited to abduction cases involving children under 18, Emerald Alerts encompass missing adults and cases with potential criminal involvement. Through this system, police expect to secure the critical golden hour for finding missing persons and expand search coverage through citizen tips.
Home Heating Tax Credit Application Deadline: September 30
Michigan residents who meet eligibility requirements, both renters and homeowners, can apply for the Home Heating Tax Credit until September 30.
Last year's applicants received an average tax credit of $180, which they used to pay utility bills. Elizabeth Hertel, Director of Health and Human Services, explained that "the application process can also connect applicants with additional benefits such as monthly energy discounts and expanded food assistance."
Some utility companies provided last year's applicants with monthly bill discounts of $20. Applications can be submitted through the state's free tax preparation service, and income requirements must be met.

Education Funding Expansion Petition Drive and Community Events
In Wayne County, the 'Invest in MI Kids' campaign officially launches Friday at Clark Park. This movement aims to collect signatures for a state constitutional amendment that would expand school funding throughout the state by raising taxes on high-income earners (individuals earning over $500,000 annually, or couples with combined income exceeding $1 million).
Critics worry this measure could impact small businesses, but organizers clarified that the petition and amendment language "targets only individual taxpayers." The event will feature food trucks and musical performances.
- When: Friday, 5-8 PM
- Where: Clark Park
Meanwhile, a Neighborhood Advisory Council (NAC) informational session for residents in the Detroit City FC's new stadium construction area will be held online Wednesday. City Councilmember Gabriela Santiago Romero will discuss the Community Benefits Ordinance (CBO) related to the $150 million AlumiFi Stadium development.
- When: Wednesday, 6:30 PM
- Format: Zoom online meeting
Free Youth Sports Experience Event
Chandler Park will host a free sports experience event for youth on Wednesday. Participants can try various sports including golf, pickleball, ultimate frisbee, rugby, lacrosse, soccer, track and field, volleyball, flag football, tennis, baseball, and yoga.
The event runs from 1-6 PM, with different time slots for each sport. Participating youth must wear athletic shoes, and guardian accompaniment is required. In celebration of the park's new indoor sports facility opening, the event will feature a DJ and food trucks.
- Location: 12300 Chandler Park Drive
