Deepika Padukone's Journey to the Hollywood Walk of Fame
Indian actress who left film after demanding 8-hour workday post-childbirth receives Hollywood Walk of Fame star

- •Deepika Padukone exited the film 'Spirit' after demanding an 8-hour workday following childbirth.
- •She became the first Indian female actress to receive a Hollywood Walk of Fame star.
- •This decision is viewed as a message for improving working conditions for actresses in the Indian film industry.
Choosing Between Motherhood and Career
Deepika Padukone, one of India's leading actresses, recently made headlines for two contrasting reasons. She exited director Sandeep Reddy Vanga's major film 'Spirit' after demanding an 8-hour workday, while simultaneously earning the honor of becoming the first Indian female actress to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Soon after giving birth to her daughter Dua, Deepika requested clear adherence to working hours from the production team. Unlike corporate jobs with set hours, film shoots often continue for days without rest depending on production schedules. While many actresses have raised concerns about excessive working hours, most have been ignored.
Following Deepika's departure, 'Spirit' continued production with Triptii Dimri cast as the new lead. News also broke of a sequel to one of her signature films, 'Cocktail', but Deepika's name was absent from the casting list. This illustrates how easily actresses can be replaced in the Indian film industry.
A Reality Even Stardom Couldn't Change
Deepika is one of India's most prominent star actresses. Along with her husband Ranveer Singh, she is considered part of a power couple in the Indian entertainment industry, operating the mental health support foundation 'Live Love Laugh Foundation' and investing in beauty and wellness businesses.
However, even her stardom couldn't change the deep-rooted practices of the Indian film industry. No matter how successful, actresses are often viewed as 'replaceable' by producers and directors. Through this decision, Deepika chose motherhood over her role, sending a new message to the Indian film industry.
The Hollywood Walk of Fame: What Lies Beneath
The Hollywood Walk of Fame is one of the highest honors given to entertainment industry professionals worldwide. While Deepika became the first Indian female actress to receive this honor, there's a complex process behind it.
According to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, anyone can nominate a celebrity by paying a fee, with final selection made by a committee. After selection, the ceremony must be held within two years, or renomination is required. Additionally, the cost to create and install a star is approximately 72 million won (about $55,000).
Industry observers suggest Deepika's nomination came through sponsorship from a luxury brand she models for. She has appeared in only one Hollywood film (XXX: Return of Xander Cage), and her Hollywood presence is lower compared to Priyanka Chopra, who lives in Los Angeles and maintains active Hollywood work.
A Message to the Indian Film Industry
Nevertheless, Deepika's decision holds significant meaning for the Indian entertainment industry. She confronted the reality of actresses forced to choose between motherhood and career, taking the first step toward improving working conditions.
Columnist Shobhaa De commented, "If Deepika succeeds in rewriting the work schedules for women in the entertainment industry, the next generation of actresses will bless her." She defended Deepika's choice, stating, "Too many women have paid an enormous price for fame and success."
Deepika directly challenged industry practices that stardom alone couldn't change. Whether her decision brings substantial change to the Indian film industry remains to be seen.
