Rochester Fringe Festival: A 12-Day Cultural Journey

The 14th annual Rochester Fringe Festival is taking place in Rochester, New York through September 20th. The festival showcases 650 performances across 30 venues throughout downtown, encompassing diverse genres including dance, theater, music, comedy, film, visual arts, acrobatics, and magic.

This year marks the return of free outdoor performances at Parcel 5, featuring world-class performers. Performances run daily throughout the festival, with special programming concentrated on weekends.

Featured Programs

Cirque du Fringe: Claws Out is a circus show at the Spiegeltent, starring Las Vegas legends Matt and Heidi Morgan. Opera singer Kitty Ross hosts the performance, which combines acrobatics, sword skills, and comedy. The show runs 11 out of 12 days, with time-slot reservations available.

Submergence is an immersive experience exhibition designed by British art collective Squidsoup. Using light, sound, and technology to simulate lucid dreaming, the installation features five movements with escalating intensity. Admission is $4 and runs throughout the festival.

In the comedy category, Chelsea Handler performs Saturday at 8 PM at the Eastman Theatre Kodak Hall. Handler hosted E!'s "Chelsea Lately" for seven years and created the Netflix documentary series "Chelsea Does" and talk show "Chelsea." She is also known as a New York Times bestselling author.

A Rockin' City Circus is a rock and roll-themed circus performance combining acrobatics including flying trapeze and juggling with live music. It runs September 12-14 at the Roc City Circus venue on University Avenue.

Other highlights include a free outdoor screening of the musical film "Wicked" (September 12 at 8 PM) and the AI Theatre Experiment. The AI Theatre Experiment mixes scripts written by ChatGPT with those by human writers, with audiences guessing which are AI-created. This free program takes place at School of the Arts.

Flower City Comic Con Runs Concurrently

The same weekend, Flower City Comic Con is being held at Total Sports Experience in Gates. Participants gather in cosplay costumes from movies and comics.

Guests include DB Woodside from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and Jim Henson cartoonist Guy Gilchrist. Additionally, 585FighterZ Esports is hosting video game tournaments.

Coexistence of Cultural Arts Festival and Pop Culture

Rochester transforms the entire city into a performance venue each mid-September through the Fringe Festival. Since its inaugural event in 2012, it has grown consistently to become a representative cultural arts festival in the eastern United States.
