Summary
  • Guadalajara, Mexico completed Caribbean Series hosting preparations in 40 days after replacing Venezuela as host city.
  • Mexico will field two teams—Charros and Tomateros—simultaneously, aiming for a 10th championship with home field advantage.
  • Star players from Colombia and Nicaragua are drawing attention from across Central and South America to the tournament.

Mexico Steps Up as Emergency Host

Mexico prepared to host the Caribbean Series in just 40 days after Venezuela faced difficulties organizing the event. Salvador Escobar, president of the Mexican Pacific League, stated, "Mexico has a commitment to preserve this tournament," adding, "Despite the short timeframe, we will deliver a world-class event."

Guadalajara, Jalisco will host the Caribbean Series from February 1-7, featuring teams from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, and two Mexican teams. Guadalajara has extensive experience hosting major international sporting events, including two World Cups and the 2011 Pan American Games.

Mexico's Championship Prospects

For this tournament, Mexico will field two teams simultaneously: Pacific League champions Charros de Jalisco and runners-up Tomateros de Culiacán. Both teams received automatic entry as host nation privileges, a factor considered to enhance Mexico's championship prospects.

President Escobar commented, "Given the high level of the Pacific League, I expect Mexico to perform well," adding, "Having two teams is a double opportunity, plus we have the home field advantage."

Mexico has won the Caribbean Series 9 times, ranking third behind the Dominican Republic (23 titles) and Puerto Rico (16 titles). Last year, Charros narrowly missed the championship, losing 0-1 to the Dominican Republic's Leones del Escogido in the finals.

Star Players and International Interest

Charros de Jalisco boasts Central and South American stars including Colombian batter Reynaldo Rodríguez and Nicaraguan pitcher Ronald Medrano. Their performances are expected to draw significant attention to both the league finals and Caribbean Series from Colombia and Nicaragua.

Currently, Charros and Tomateros are competing in the Pacific League finals, with the winner representing Mexico as the country's primary team in the Caribbean Series.

Potential Changes for Caribbean Baseball Confederation

President Escobar revealed that the Caribbean Baseball Confederation is open to new developments. "Recently, several countries including Panama have expressed interest in participating," he explained, "The confederation is prepared to embrace innovative changes."

While the Caribbean Series currently consists of nations operating winter leagues, participation possibilities for recently active countries like Panama are being discussed.

Enthusiasm among Guadalajara fans is running high. President Escobar emphasized, "Preparations are progressing smoothly and Guadalajara fans are showing tremendous interest," adding, "This will be a celebration of Mexican baseball."
