Symbol of Mexican Education, 115 Years of History

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has reached its 115th anniversary. Since its first opening ceremony at the National Preparatory School's amphitheater on September 22, 1910, UNAM has grown into Mexico's leading institution of higher education.

The university's history dates back to September 21, 1521, when a royal decree was issued to establish the Royal Pontifical University of Mexico. After several name changes over the years, it evolved into its current form.

Achieving Autonomy and Expansion

Justo Sierra Méndez, a Mexican writer and politician, announced the establishment of the National University of Mexico. At its opening in 1910, it consisted of the National Preparatory School, faculties of law, medicine, and engineering, and the architecture department of the National School of Fine Arts. In 1945, the university gained university autonomy, becoming the National Autonomous University of Mexico as it is known today.

Currently, UNAM operates over 100 campuses throughout Mexico City and provinces, with additional campuses abroad. It offers more than 130 undergraduate programs and various graduate programs in physical sciences and engineering, biological sciences-chemistry-health, social sciences, and arts and humanities.

Distinguished Alumni

Over 115 years, UNAM has produced notable figures active in various sectors of Mexican society. Alumni include current Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Academy Award-winning director Alfonso Cuarón, science communicator Julieta Fierro, and Nobel Prize in Literature laureate Octavio Paz.

Cultural, Artistic, and Athletic Hub

UNAM serves as more than just an educational institution—it functions as a cultural hub. The university operates cultural facilities including various art workshops, professional soccer team Pumas, Casa del Lago, and the University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC), encouraging artistic and athletic participation within the university community.

Global Recognition

UNAM enjoys international recognition. In the QS World University Rankings 2025, it ranked among the world's top 100 universities twice, a symbolic achievement demonstrating Mexico's educational standards.

With over a century of accumulated history, culture, and academic achievements, UNAM remains Mexico's most important university.
