Summary
  • Riot Games revealed new Sentinel agent Veto at the Valorant Champions Paris Grand Finals.
  • Veto features unique mechanics that neutralize enemy utility and strengthen defense through mutation abilities.
  • Launching October 7th, the agent is evaluated as a new defensive option that could shake up the utility-focused meta.

A New Sentinel Ready to Shake Up the Meta

Riot Games surprised attendees at the Valorant Champions Grand Finals in Paris by unveiling 'Veto,' a new Sentinel agent. Hailing from Senegal, this agent features a unique mechanic that can neutralize enemy skills and utility through DNA mutation-enhanced abilities.

Veto will officially launch on October 7th and is expected to provide a new option for players tired of the current utility-focused meta, offering a path to victory through gunplay skill.

Veto's Ability Kit

Veto possesses four core abilities specialized in defense:

Chokehold: Deploys a trap by throwing a mutant fragment that pins enemies in place. Captured enemies have their hearing blocked and health depleted, though they can destroy it before activation.

Crosscut: Places a vortex on the ground that allows teleportation when looking at it within range and reactivating. During buy phase, it can be retrieved and redeployed.

Interceptor: Once placed and activated, automatically destroys all utility that can bounce off players or be destroyed by gunfire. Enemies can destroy the Interceptor itself.

Evolution: The ultimate ability that immediately transforms into a full mutation state, granting combat stim, health regeneration, and immunity to all debuffs.

A New Alternative for Defensive Meta

Valorant Game Designer Nicholas Smith explained, "Veto's kit is designed around anti-utility, providing defenders with more powerful site-holding options." He revealed the development intent, stating, "Many teams use retake strategies, but we wanted to provide choices for holding positions."

Smith defined Veto's playstyle as 'boldness.' The teleport offers powerful repositioning potential enabling retreat, regrouping, and maintaining control, while the ultimate creates moments to play confidently and sometimes aggressively.

He added, "Veto can be played as a traditional defensive Sentinel, or more aggressively to create space and generate plays."

Challenging the Utility-Focused Meta

Veto's introduction aligns with Riot's recent balance direction. The development team has been implementing systematic changes such as reducing utility size, and Veto is designed within this trend to enable players to defend sites more confidently through an agent-specific toolkit.

Veto's setup adaptively changes over time based on opponent play, which is expected to add new strategic depth to the competitive meta.
