Brussels: A New Hub for Contemporary Art

Brussels, Belgium is emerging as a new center for European contemporary art. The Kanal-Centre Pompidou, scheduled to open on November 28, is poised to become one of Europe's largest contemporary art museums.

Visit Brussels and the Brussels Regional Representative Office announced these developments at a press conference held at the Belgian Embassy in Rome. Having successfully concluded the Year of Art Deco, Brussels now turns its attention to contemporary art, further strengthening its position as a cultural city.

Victor Horta's Bozar Questions Beauty Standards

Prior to the opening of Kanal-Centre Pompidou, a noteworthy exhibition is underway at the Bozar Centre. This architectural masterpiece, designed by Art Nouveau master Victor Horta, is itself a work of art.

Earlier this year, Bozar presented two exhibitions exploring changes in beauty standards and modes of representation. The program examines how beauty has been defined and expressed across different eras and artistic genres.

Italian Tourists Flock to Brussels

Brussels is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for Italian tourists. Italian visitors through September 2025 exceeded 240,000, representing a 9.5% increase compared to the previous year. Italy has risen to become the sixth-largest source market for tourists visiting Brussels.

Ursula Ione Gandini, Director of Visit Brussels Italy, and Guglielmo Pisana, Brussels Regional Representative for Italy, Malta, and San Marino, emphasized that "Brussels is establishing itself as an important partner with Italy not only in commercial relations but also in cultural exchange."

Shifting Landscape of European Museums

The opening of Kanal-Centre Pompidou represents more than simply adding another museum. As the first official satellite of Paris's Centre Pompidou, this project symbolizes the strengthening of cultural networks among major European cities.

Contemporary art enthusiasts are now expected to consider Brussels a must-visit destination alongside Paris, London, and Berlin. Brussels has added cultural capital status to its political standing as the seat of the European Union headquarters.
