Summary
  • Acer has unveiled the Predator Helios 18P laptop targeting AI developers.
  • It features up to 192GB ECC memory and RTX 5090 (24GB VRAM), capable of running local LLMs.
  • It supports a 4K mini-LED display and Thunderbolt 5, launching later this year starting at approximately $4,000.

Gaming and AI Development Combined

Acer has presented a new direction for its Predator gaming brand lineup. The Predator Helios 18P, unveiled on September 3rd (local time), appears to be a typical gaming laptop on the outside, but inside it's packed with enterprise-grade hardware designed for AI developers and programmers.

This 3.5kg laptop features an 18-inch large display and, along with an Intel Core Ultra 9 processor, supports up to 192GB of ECC (Error-Correcting Code) memory. It can be equipped with up to 6TB of PCIe Gen5 SSD storage, enabling users to run large language models (LLMs) locally without relying on cloud servers.

RTX 5090 with 24GB VRAM

Graphics processing is handled by the NVIDIA RTX 5090 laptop GPU. With 24GB of dedicated video memory, this GPU delivers 1,824 TOPS of AI computing performance. When not performing AI tasks, it can smoothly run all games at maximum settings using DLSS upscaling and frame generation technology.

For thermal management, Acer has equipped the laptop with two 6th-generation AeroBlade metal fans. The system combines 0.05mm-thin blades with multiple heat pipes and liquid metal thermal paste to efficiently dissipate heat. Most of the cooling system is positioned in the rear "chin" section, allowing other parts to remain relatively slim.

4K Mini-LED Display and Abundant Expandability

The 18-inch display features a 4K resolution mini-LED panel, delivering up to 1,000 nits of brightness when playing HDR content. According to hands-on testing in Acer's demo space, it showed overwhelmingly sharp image quality even in dark environments.

Thanks to the spacious 18-inch form factor, the keyboard includes a numeric keypad without sacrificing key size or spacing. In addition to per-key RGB lighting, the rear 'HELIOS' logo is also illuminated, suggesting a pursuit of restrained design over flashy multi-color RGB.

The port configuration is comprehensive. It includes two Thunderbolt 5 Type-C ports, three USB Type-A ports, HDMI 2.1, and a full-size SD card reader. Some ports are positioned on the rear to allow for cleaner cable management when used on a desk. Audio is handled by a DTS:X-supported 6-speaker array.

Year-End Launch, Starting at Approximately $4,000

The Predator Helios 18P will first launch in North American and European markets by the end of this year. Starting prices are £4,300 in the UK, $3,999 in the US, and €4,499 in Europe (approximately $4,000-5,900), though prices are expected to be significantly higher when selecting maximum specifications optimized for AI development.

Alongside the Helios 18P, Acer also unveiled the 26.5-inch OLED monitor 'Predator X27U F8'. This product, supporting a 540Hz refresh rate, also targets both gaming and professional work simultaneously.
