Istanbul's Football Holy Ground Returns
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) has completely remodeled the Balat sports facilities in Fatih district, known as the birthplace of Turkish football, and provided sports equipment to 45 local amateur football clubs.
At the opening ceremony held on the 8th, Republican People's Party (CHP) Deputy Chairman Gökhan Zeybek expressed gratitude, saying "Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu took over this facility after taking office in 2019 and returned it to local clubs." While Mayor İmamoğlu is currently detained due to political controversies, Deputy Mayor Murat Aslan is continuing his policies.
The Roots of Turkish Football Since the 1900s
The Fatih district, where Balat is located, holds special significance in Turkish football history. Deputy Chairman Zeybek emphasized that "most of the clubs that participated when the Turkish league was first created were from Fatih."
Kadırga, Yeşildirek, Langa, Davutpaşa, Vefa, Karagümrük, Topkapı and other legendary clubs founded in the early 1900s all started in neighborhood football fields in this area. They grew from neighborhood football to become core clubs forming Turkey's national league.
However, entering the 2010s, facilities in this area became neglected due to aging, and some were monopolized by professional club Başakşehir F.K., restricting amateur clubs' access.
Facility Recovery, Redistribution, and Controversy
Mayor İmamoğlu recovered the Balat facilities used by Başakşehir F.K. immediately after taking office in 2019 and redistributed them to 45 amateur clubs. Along with this, several facilities in Fatih district including Mimar Sinan Stadium and Namık Sevik Sports Center were also restored.
In his opening ceremony speech, Deputy Mayor Murat Aslan said, "Mayor Ekrem put on a uniform for Istanbul in 2019, and then tried to put on a uniform for the Turkish presidency, but a foul whistle was blown," using metaphor for the current political situation. He added, "The color of that uniform is solidarity, and the emblem on it is the love of citizens," stating "citizens will never withdraw their love from İmamoğlu."
Ali Düşmez, president of the Turkish Amateur Sports Clubs Federation, expressed gratitude for Istanbul's support, saying "all those who support amateur sports are heroes."
Expanding Sports Facility Network from Beyoğlu to Beşiktaş
Deputy Chairman Zeybek announced that "facilities have opened in various areas including Beyoğlu, Fatih, Esenler, Bayrampaşa, Gaziosmanpaşa, and Kağıthane, and new facilities will open in Beşiktaş next week."
He added, "Children who grow up in these facilities will grow as athletes in Turkish football and various sports fields," saying "the only wish is for a child raised in this stadium to become a national team player."
Future Outlook [AI Analysis]
Istanbul's amateur sports support policy is highly likely to become a model for rebuilding Turkey's sports infrastructure. As the neighborhood football culture formed since the early 1900s combines with modern facilities, the Fatih area could once again establish itself as a talent pool for Turkish football.
However, given the uncertain political situation of Mayor İmamoğlu, the sustainability of these policies remains a key concern. While it is positive that projects are expanding under the current deputy mayor system, long-term funding security and operational system establishment are needed at this juncture.
