Final Journey of a Power Worker Devoted to His Community
Mark C. Greenan of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative & Hospice Care in Lebanon, New Hampshire, surrounded by his family. His passing occurred on what would have been his father Hugh Greenan's 95th birthday.
Born and raised in St. Johnsbury, he lived a life deeply rooted in family, faith, and community. After graduating from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1989 and Vermont Technical College in 1992, he dedicated his entire career to the electric utility industry.
A Man Who Kept the Lights On Through Every Storm
Greenan began as a lineman at Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS, now Green Mountain Power) and later served as an electric system operator. He responded to countless emergency calls during the worst weather conditions and traveled out of state for power restoration efforts following major natural disasters.
Among his colleagues, he was renowned for his profound knowledge of the power grid. He could recall pole numbers from memory and explain to anyone how electricity reaches each home. Those who worked alongside him weren't just coworkers—they were family, and he was widely respected for his expertise, reliability, and dedication.
A Father Who Put Family First
Above all else, family came first. He was immensely proud of his children and rarely missed a single game or school event. Whether it was his son Patrick's baseball and football games, his daughter Emma's softball and soccer matches, or both children's basketball games, he was always there.
As Patrick pursued his education at St. Lawrence University and Emma continued her studies at Colby-Sawyer College, Greenan and his wife Amy traveled countless miles together to support their children. Making time for their kids wasn't something they had to do—it was simply their life.
Love of Sports and Life of Faith
A lifelong sports enthusiast, he was particularly well-known for his unwavering love of the Boston Red Sox. His encyclopedic knowledge of the team, players, statistics, and history made him the most sought-after companion for game day conversations.
Faith was also an important part of his life. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus Sheridan Council 421, demonstrating his commitment to faith, service, and fellowship as a Fourth Degree member.
Courageous Battle and Final Moments
Throughout his long and courageous battle with an aggressive form of lymphoma, Greenan faced each day with remarkable strength and dignity, always sustained by his family's love.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Amy; his children Patrick (and his wife Abby) and Emma; his brothers Kevin, Paul, and John Greenan; his father-in-law Richard Barrett; brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, extended family, and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents Hugh and Mary Greenan, and his beloved mother-in-law Janet C. Barrett.
