Afghan Refugee Boys Find New Dreams on U.S. High School Wrestling Team
Two boys who settled in Texas on Special Immigrant Visas share their 8-year journey and how sports gave them a second chance at life

- •Two boys who came to Texas from Afghanistan on Special Immigrant Visas in 2016 have grown into athletes on a San Antonio high school wrestling team.
- •Over eight years, these children who spoke no English adapted to American society through sports including soccer and wrestling.
- •Refugee youth participation in sports is recognized as an effective method for achieving social integration beyond language barriers.
A Friendship Born on a Flight from Kabul
In February 2016, Elham Jalak (then 6) and Mustafa Pashtun (then 8) met for the first time aboard an Emirates double-decker aircraft departing Kabul. Both boys' fathers had served in the Afghan government forces and earned the opportunity to come to the United States through the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program due to their collaboration with U.S. military forces.
After a 16-hour flight through Houston, they arrived in San Antonio, Texas. The two boys, who didn't know a single word of English, recall "we couldn't even write our names." For children whose only knowledge of America came from movies, their new life was both daunting and filled with anticipation.
Learning American Life Through Sports
The two families initially settled in an immigrant-dense area of northwest San Antonio before relocating to the West Side two years later. As they adapted to their new environment, Jalak and Pashtun began connecting with their peers through sports.
Jalak tried nearly every sport available: soccer, cross country, track and field, golf, tennis, football, and basketball. "We always played together," they recall. For these boys, the playing field was more than just a space for physical education—it was a pathway to integrating into American society beyond language barriers.
Finding Belonging on the Wrestling Team
After entering high school, both boys joined the wrestling team at a San Antonio high school. Wrestling, which demands both individual skill and teamwork, holds special meaning for refugee youth who have experienced the trauma of war and displacement.
On the wrestling mat, they could set aside the heavy identity of being "teenagers who fled a war-torn country" and simply compete and grow as members of the team. Their coaches and teammates understood their backgrounds while treating them as equals on the squad.
An Alternative Model for Refugee Resettlement
The Afghan Special Immigrant Visa program has gained increased attention since the U.S. military withdrawal in 2021. This program, designed to protect Afghans who collaborated with the U.S. government and their families, aims for long-term social integration beyond simple humanitarian aid.
The cases of Jalak and Pashtun demonstrate that refugee youth can successfully settle through sports, education, and community activities. Texas has been particularly active in accepting Afghan and Iraqi refugees, and San Antonio is a representative city where immigrants from diverse cultural backgrounds coexist.
Future Outlook [AI Analysis]
While refugee resettlement policy in the United States remains a subject of political debate, local-level integration success stories continue to accumulate. Youth sports programs are particularly recognized as effective tools for transcending language and cultural barriers.
When 1.5-generation refugees like Jalak and Pashtun reach adulthood, they are likely to serve as cultural bridges between their homeland and America. The sight of boys who didn't know a single English word eight years ago now excelling on high school athletic teams suggests that refugee policy is not merely an expense but a social investment.
