Finding Growth Amid the Pain of Divorce

Jennifer Lopez has confessed that her divorce from Ben Affleck became the biggest catalyst for personal growth in her life.

In an interview with CBS News' 'Sunday Morning,' Lopez candidly shared her feelings during the filming of 'Kiss of the Spider Woman.' "It was a really hard time. On set, every moment playing this role made me happy. But when I went home, the situation wasn't good. I struggled with how to balance these two things."

A Dream Role and the Timing of Divorce

For Lopez, this film was much more than just another project. The 2024 adaptation of the 1994 Broadway musical tells the story of political prisoner Valentin and fellow inmate Molina who find hope through musical fantasies amid the dark reality of prison.

Ironically, the film's production team included her ex-husband Ben Affleck and his partner Matt Damon as executive producers. Filming wrapped in June 2024, and two months later, the couple announced their separation. The divorce was finalized a few weeks after Lopez broke down in tears on stage at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

"It Didn't Change Me, It Helped Me Grow"

When asked about her feelings regarding the coinciding of her dream role and divorce, Lopez offered an unexpected answer.

"It was the best thing that's happened in my life. Because it changed me." She immediately continued: "No, it didn't change me. It helped me grow in the way that I needed to grow."

Connecting the film's contrast between darkness and joy with her own experience, Lopez said: "Hard times are lessons. You have to understand that. Once you understand it, everything becomes a little lighter. And then you can really fly."

When asked "Do you feel like you're flying now?", Lopez responded, "Yes, I do. And I still want to fly higher. I want to see more, do more."

Bennifer's 20-Year Love Story

The relationship between Lopez and Affleck, dubbed 'Bennifer,' is one of Hollywood's most watched couple stories.

The two first met on the set of the 2002 film 'Gigli' and got engaged that November. However, their wedding was postponed and they announced their split in January 2004. After each went through marriages and divorces with other people, they reunited in 2021 and remarried in July 2022.

But just two years into their marriage, Lopez filed for divorce and legally requested to remove Affleck's surname. In a previous interview, Lopez described her state of mind at the time, saying "my whole world exploded."

Affleck, meanwhile, has remained largely silent about the divorce, but in a March interview with 'GQ,' he dismissed dramatic breakup theories. "There's no scandal, no melodrama, no conspiracy. The truth is, if you ask 'what happened,' there's nothing to say like 'this happened.' It's just the story of people trying to sort out their lives and relationships in the way we all normally do."

A New Beginning

'Kiss of the Spider Woman' is scheduled for release on October 10. Through this work, Lopez has transformed personal pain into artistic growth and is now opening a new chapter.

Lopez recently attended the American Music Awards, walking the red carpet with a bright smile, showing her recovered state. As she said, having endured the darkness, she is now ready to fly even higher.
