Keith Urban's First Extended Interview After Divorce
Country music star Keith Urban has given his first extended interview since his divorce from Nicole Kidman. In a conversation with legendary guitarist and producer Dan Huff, Urban shared deep insights about both his music and personal growth.
When Huff asked near the end of the interview what he was working on personally, Urban paused thoughtfully before responding:
"In terms of guitar playing, I want to learn to play less. Not playing the next two notes I was going to play. Having the confidence that what I'm playing right now is enough, and letting that note sit for a moment."
A Philosophy Beyond Music
Urban's answer soon expanded beyond music to encompass his entire life.
"Being aware that I'm conscious. That the voices in my head aren't me, but rather I'm the person listening to those voices. When you think about it that way, everything becomes simpler, and you return to a place that's quiet, stable, and centered."
Urban shared a deeper insight by quoting a friend's wisdom.
"A friend told me, 'Think about how you greet each day in the morning.' I thought that was such a beautiful expression. He asked me, 'How do you greet each day?' In that moment, I realized. This is it."
Urban emphasized the importance of being able to do this daily.
"How you start your day in the morning. That's where I am right now. Simplifying. Simplification is my journey this year."
End of 19-Year Marriage to Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman filed for divorce from Keith Urban in Davidson County, Tennessee on September 30, 2025. The divorce petition cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for ending their 19-year marriage, and a judge officially finalized the divorce on January 6, 2026.
The couple married in 2006 and were considered one of Hollywood and country music's power couples, but their increasingly rare public appearances together in recent years had fueled persistent divorce rumors.
Candid Conversation About Music and Life
During the approximately two-hour interview, Urban and Huff engaged in an in-depth discussion about music and guitar.
Urban revealed that he's currently reading more poetry than music. He also discussed the reality of corporate event performances and his identity as, above all else, a live musician.
Reflecting on his early days as a songwriter in Nashville, Urban described it as "soul-crushing" until he found collaborators who worked in a similar way to him.
He was particularly candid about feeling anxious regarding the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI). "I can't even wrap my head around the fact that we're creating something ourselves," he said, revealing his complex feelings about technological change.
A Musician Preparing for a New Beginning
Navigating through the major life transition of divorce, Keith Urban appears focused on more essential things. 'Playing less and feeling more deeply,' 'greeting each morning anew,' 'finding center in simplicity'—all these philosophies demonstrate his determination to recalibrate not just his music but his entire life.
Fans around the world are eager to see what music and messages Urban, who won hearts with hits like "Somebody Like You," will deliver in the future.
