Women in Sports Gather to Share Their Stories
On September 24, Mexican sports media outlet Mediotiempo hosted 'Foro MT Mujeres 2025.' The event brought together women professionals from sports media, club management, and active athletes to share their experiences and inspire the next generation.
The forum consisted of three panels, each focusing on media professionals, club executives, and elite athletes respectively. Participants candidly discussed the structural barriers women face in the sports industry and shared success stories, emphasizing the common goal of increasing visibility for women's sports.
Media Panel: Learning the Language of a Male-Dominated Field
The first session, 'Women in Media,' featured first-generation Mexican sports journalists including Geo González, María Fernanda Mora, Ana Caty Hernández, and Claudia García.
Under the theme "Trinchera de machismo" (Trenches of machismo), they shared experiences of having to learn the language and culture prevalent in a male-dominated industry to survive. They emphasized that ability alone wasn't enough—they had to fight stereotypes while paving the way for younger colleagues.
Management Panel: Women's Leagues Are Growing, But Challenges Remain
The second session included Adriana Treviño, Commercial Director of Liga Mexicana de Béisbol (LMB); Mariana Gutiérrez, President of Liga MX Femenil (women's soccer); Olympia Cabral, General Manager of Chivas Femenil; María Teresa Orbañanos, Head of Social Responsibility at FOX; and Jessica Támez from Sultanes' HR department.
They highlighted the fundamental dilemma in marketing women's sports: "Planning campaigns is challenging when budget, attention, and media exposure are significantly lower compared to men's leagues." They also noted that the proportion of women in management positions remains extremely low compared to men.
However, there is hope. Currently, Liga MX Femenil has secured 30 million viewers and shows steady growth. President Gutiérrez stated, "While the league is still young and limited to certain fan bases, we must continue working to attract a broader audience."
Athletes Panel: Olympic Medalists Share Their Perspectives
The final session featured professional basketball player Daniela Soto, softball national team member Yanina Treviño, Olympic diving medalist Gabriela Agundez, and Club América soccer player Karen Luna.
They discussed their journeys as elite athletes while emphasizing the need to improve awareness of women's sports. They particularly stressed that "creating an environment where young girls can dream of becoming professional athletes or working in the sports industry" will ultimately lead to industry-wide development.
Future Outlook [AI Analysis]
This forum is significant for initiating serious discussions on gender balance in the sports industry. Investment in women's sports leagues is increasing not only in Mexico but throughout Latin America, and women's soccer is expected to grow further with the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North and Central America.
However, structural change cannot happen overnight. Numerous challenges remain, including media exposure, sponsorships, and wage gaps—issues that require both industry-wide attitude shifts and institutional support.
If Mediotiempo makes this event annual, it could serve as a catalyst for attracting next-generation female talent to the industry.
