Mega Healthcare Hub Coming to Vietnam's Capital

Hanoi city held a groundbreaking ceremony on January 17 in Hoang Mai district for the Hanoi Medical University Elderly Healthcare Complex. With a total investment of 16,093 billion VND (approximately $900 million), this project is set to become Vietnam's largest healthcare complex, combining an AI-based smart hospital with senior-dedicated residential facilities.

The project targets Phase 1 completion by 2028 and full completion by 2030. Associate Professor Nguyen Lan Hieu of Hanoi Medical University Hospital stated, "This complex will become a medical-education-research ecosystem integrating treatment, education, research, technology transfer, and elderly care."

2,600-bed Facility with AI Diagnostics to Organ Transplants

Zone 1, spanning 15 hectares, will house a 2,600-bed comprehensive hospital complex. The core structure centers around a 1,000-bed general hospital connected to specialized centers including oncology, surgery & organ transplant, geriatric medicine, endocrinology, dentistry, and international patient services.

The hospital is designed as a 'smart hospital' and 'green hospital', utilizing AI throughout diagnostics, treatment, hospital operations, and residential area management. The facility plans to implement cutting-edge medical technologies including organ transplantation, robotic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, stem cell therapy, gene therapy, radiation therapy, 3D printing, and advanced imaging diagnostics.

The same zone will also include research institutes, lecture halls, and dormitories for 10,000 students of Hanoi Medical University. After the new hospital opens in 2028, additional facilities such as surgical and oncology centers will be constructed to complete the entire complex by 2030.

1,100 Units Customized by Senior Independence Levels

Zone 2, covering 0.7 hectares, will feature a senior-dedicated residential complex. Composed of two 35-story towers atop a 6-story podium, the complex will accommodate approximately 2,530 residents across 1,100 units.

The distinctive feature of this housing facility is its tiered care system based on residents' independence levels. It offers various types of living spaces ranging from regular apartments for fully independent seniors to units for those requiring partial assistance, and facilities for those needing 24-hour comprehensive care. Nutrition management and rehabilitation programs will also be integrated.

The spatial layout allocates medical, service, and health management facilities on floors 1-6 of the podium, with residential spaces on floors 7-35. Approximately 10% of total residential area consists of 25-35㎡ (up to 45㎡) rental studio units for seniors with lower independence levels. The remainder comprises 60-80㎡ two- to three-room apartments for general sale.

This residential complex will be closely integrated with the Hanoi Medical University Hospital system to provide continuous, specialized medical services to residents. The residential complex also targets 2028 completion.

Starting Point for Vietnam's Aging Society Response

This project is garnering attention as a new healthcare model addressing Vietnam's rapid aging. Drawing from senior housing models in developed nations including the United States, Japan, and South Korea, it represents an unprecedented attempt in Vietnam to integrate medical care, education, research, and housing into a single ecosystem.

Hanoi city expects this complex to become a key hub driving digital transformation in the capital region's healthcare system. Project implementation will be handled by Hanoi Housing Development and Investment Corporation (HANDICO) and NGS Equipment & Communications JSC.
