A Special Soul Who Built Community

Kyle McKittrick, a wheelchair rugby player widely beloved in the Santa Barbara, California community, has passed away at the age of 38. Born on June 19, 1986, in Pleasanton, California, he remained active until January 2025, leaving a profound impact on the spinal cord injury community.

Kyle was more than just an athlete. Those who knew him remember him as the embodiment of "kindness, compassion, humor, and the ability to make people feel valued." His brother Marc McKittrick described Kyle as "a reliable, protective, adventurous, and deeply loyal" brother and lifelong friend.

A Life-Changing Injury and Comeback

Kyle moved to Santa Barbara at age 20, where he studied at Santa Barbara City College and worked in the local service industry. Working at establishments including Sandbar, Pierre Lafond, and Shalhoob's, he became not just an employee but a central figure in the community.

In 2018, Kyle's life changed completely due to a traumatic spinal cord injury. However, what he demonstrated in the following years was not defeat, but extraordinary resilience and determination. With support from his parents, siblings, and friends, Kyle regained his independence and became an inspiration to other people with disabilities.

Excelling as a 'Murderball' Player and Mentor

Kyle found new passion in wheelchair rugby (also known as 'murderball'). He competed for the Vegas Highrollers and Northridge Knights, growing into a respected teammate, competitor, and leader.

Simultaneously, he worked as a peer mentor at Cottage Rehabilitation, providing hope and guidance to the newly injured. His mentorship was not merely advice, but living proof through his own experience that "recovery and adaptation are possible."

A Family-First Philosophy

Kyle always lived by a "family first" philosophy. The strong family values and faith he inherited from the McKittrick and Cereghino families were pillars of his life.

He also shared a special bond with his dog Bailey. Rescued when young, Bailey was Kyle's lifelong companion and source of comfort.

"Whether walking or rolling in on his wheelchair, Kyle commanded every eye in the room." Friends recall how his smile, charm, and authenticity shone through in any situation.
