From Stage to Legislature: Taiwanese Celebrities' Democratic Practice
From Freddy Lim to Yu Tian, Entertainment Stars Choose Political Participation

- •Four Taiwanese entertainment stars have entered politics to practice democracy.
- •Metal vocalist Freddy Lim served as legislator and is transitioning to become representative to Finland.
- •Singer Yu Tian, actor Yang Lieh, and drama star Guo Yu-ching continue political participation in their own ways.
Taiwan's Entertainment Industry Enters the Political Arena
As Taiwan's large-scale recall movement in 2025 generates heated debate, the political participation of entertainment stars is drawing renewed attention. These individuals are not merely making supportive statements or participating in campaigns—they are directly running for office and entering parliament to practice democratic values.
The Liberty Times highlighted four representative figures who moved from entertainment to politics. Despite spanning different generations and fields, they share a common belief: "Democracy is not a spectator sport."
Freddy Lim: From Metal Vocalist to Legislator
Freddy Lim, vocalist of heavy metal band Chthonic, is Taiwan's first rock star-turned-legislator. His political participation is an extension of his musical activism.
Freddy founded the Free Tibet Concert in 2009, supporting Tibet's human rights and religious freedom. A large portrait of the Dalai Lama hangs in his legislative office, and he has openly supported exchanges with Tibet's government-in-exile.
Elected as a Taipei City legislator under the New Power Party in 2016, he successfully won reelection as an independent in 2020. During his tenure, he supported various social movements including anti-media monopoly, opposition to the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement, marriage equality, and transitional justice. He also served as chairman of Amnesty International Taiwan.
In parliament, he promoted the "Open Parliament Action Plan," leading transparency reforms. Chthonic has performed multiple times in Europe and Finland, earning the moniker "Asia's Black Sabbath." In May this year, Freddy announced his transition to become Taiwan's representative to Finland and is awaiting formal appointment.
Yu Tian: From King of Songs to Voice of the Common People
Singer Yu Tian, who made Under the Banyan Tree a hit, is a veteran of Taiwan's entertainment industry and a three-time legislator. His political journey began in 2008, and despite ups and downs, he has dedicated himself to issues concerning grassroots citizens, elderly care, and arts and culture development.
Yu Tian won a 2019 by-election in New Taipei City's Sanchong district and was reelected in 2020. Since 2024, he has served as a Presidential Office National Policy Advisor.
He confessed to "selling eight houses" to fund his political activities, describing politics as "like a smiling tiger." These remarks suggest that unlike his glamorous entertainment career, politics has been a difficult path.
Yang Lieh: Golden Bell Winner Continues Public Service After Election Loss
Yang Lieh, active in film, television, and music, is a familiar face in Taiwan's public welfare sector. In 2012, he ran as a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate for Taipei City legislator but was not elected.
However, he never left the public arena. In 2009, he founded the Taipei City Association for Promoting Animal Life Education and served as its first chairman, leading a movement to introduce animal protection and life education into schools.
In the HBO political drama Island Nation, he played the role of Taiwan's president, reenacting former President Lee Teng-hui's 1995 Cornell University speech with the phrase "Min zhi suo yu, chang zai wo xin (What the people desire is always in my heart)," leaving a deep impression.
Guo Yu-ching: From 'Teacher Wan' to At-Large Legislator
Guo Yu-ching, who became famous as Teacher Wan Ren-mei in the drama Spicy Teacher, officially entered politics after being elected as the DPP's 12th at-large legislator in 2024.
Having long been interested in education and democratic issues, she has repeatedly used social media to advocate for Taiwan's sovereignty and human rights. Her conviction is to "influence the next generation with positive energy."
After entering the Legislative Yuan, she actively participates in the Education and Culture Committee, promoting 'food education starts at home' policies and focusing on children's dietary education and family health.
She also launched the "Legislative Visual Culture Industry Workers' Rights Promotion Association" to improve the rights of audiovisual workers, securing bipartisan endorsement from over 30 legislators. This demonstrates her intention to leverage her entertainment background as a bridge between policy and industry.
However, she has also faced controversy over social media posts. After posting a video criticizing a man filmed on the street, she became embroiled in "public trial" controversy, leading her to delete the post and apologize. While she explained her original intent concerned child safety, she has experienced both high attention and controversy early in her political career.
New Faces of Taiwan's Democracy
These four politicians from entertainment backgrounds participate in politics through different paths and methods, but share a common goal of protecting and advancing Taiwan's democracy.
Freddy Lim operates on the international diplomatic stage, Yu Tian focuses on grassroots issues, Yang Lieh works in public welfare, and Guo Yu-ching concentrates on education and cultural policy—each exercising influence in their respective domains. Their presence demonstrates that Taiwan's politics is not merely the domain of career politicians but an open space where people from diverse backgrounds can participate.
