A house for three generations in a national park
Cabin Above the Valley, a residential space for a three-generation family, was completed in the Strážné region of the Czech Republic. This building, designed by System Recovery Architects, has a total area of 293 m2 and is scheduled for completion in 2025.
Helena Línová and Vítězslav Kůstka, who led the design, aimed to create an architecture that would naturally blend into the strictly protected national park environment while exploring the heritage of the existing building. At the same time, an open structure was completed toward the open view of the valley.
Balance between nature and architecture
At the heart of this project is the balance between the constraints and possibilities of architecture within a protected area. The architects created a modern living environment while respecting the context of the existing house. In addition to window placement that maximizes the panoramic valley view, locality and sustainability were considered at the same time by using materials from local European manufacturers such as E-deck, Javorina, Josko, and Trapa.
As it is a space where three generations live together, it appears that harmony between privacy and shared areas between generations was a major design challenge. According to architectural media reports, this house was completed with a structure that ensures the independence of each family member while enabling daily life together in nature.
Trends in modern residential architecture in the Czech Republic
The Czech Republic has in recent years demonstrated notable work in residential architecture that is in harmony with the natural environment. In particular, projects near national parks and protected areas that implement modern aesthetics while complying with environmental regulations are increasing. 'Cabin on the Valley' is evaluated as an example of meeting the complex residential conditions of a three-generation family within this trend.
