Quantum sensor technology heads to space
Canadian quantum technology startup SBQuantum is launching the Quantum Diamond Magnetometer on a low-orbit satellite. According to related industry reports, this launch is scheduled to take place on March 30th through SpaceX's Falcon 9 rideshare mission.
The satellite platform, ground station infrastructure, and data processing services are provided by Spire Global, an American satellite data company. The size of the magnetometer is about the size of a 1-liter milk carton, making it suitable for mounting on a small satellite.
Why this launch is important
Quantum diamond magnetometer is a next-generation sensor technology that can measure extremely small magnetic field changes by utilizing nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defects in diamond. It provides higher precision and stability than existing magnetometers, and is expected to have various applications such as measuring the Earth's magnetic field in the space environment, exploring resources, and improving satellite navigation precision.
This launch is expected to be an important experiment to verify how quantum sensor technology operates in a real space environment. If successful operation is confirmed, the technology can be expanded and applied to more precise Earth observation and space exploration missions in the future.
Spire Global is a company that collects weather, ocean, and aviation data by operating more than 100 small satellites, and is expanding its business into the quantum sensor field through this collaboration.
