A Political Earthquake, Felt First in the Arts

Viktor Orbán, Hungary's longest-serving prime minister, was ousted in a landslide defeat by Péter Magyar's Tisza Party on Sunday. Streets in Budapest erupted in celebration, and centrist and left-wing leaders across Europe were quick to welcome the result. Some observers have called it the most consequential European parliamentary election of 2026.

Few communities responded with more visceral relief than Hungary's art world. Margit Valkó, founder of Budapest's Kisterem gallery, put it plainly: "We definitely belong to the extremely happy part of the crowd." Artist János Sugár described "an enormous sense of relief," recalling scenes of people in the streets "hugging, crying with happiness, opening champagne."

What Orbán's Cultural Policy Actually Meant

Orbán co-founded the Fidesz party in the late 1980s, evolving from anti-communist liberal roots to a staunchly nationalist, socially conservative platform built around the defence of "Christian civilisation" and a self-styled "illiberal democracy."

Sugár characterises Orbán's cultural legacy in a single word: anti-contemporary. "It was uncultivated and opposed everything in which it perceived critical content."

The 2021 so-called child protection law, which restricted public gatherings deemed to promote LGBTQ+ themes, became emblematic of this agenda. In 2023, it was invoked to dismiss the director of the Hungarian National Museum. The EU establishment in Brussels had long viewed Orbán as an internal adversary who undermined rule of law and enabled widespread corruption.

Sixteen Years of Institutional Erosion

The damage to Hungary's cultural ecosystem ran deeper than censorship. Under Fidesz, the Hungarian Academy of Arts was granted sweeping control over public arts funding—effectively transforming it into an arm of the government's conservative cultural agenda, critics say.

State media was similarly weaponised. Magyar labelled it a "factory of lies" during the campaign and has already announced plans to suspend state-controlled broadcasting.

Attila Pőcze of Budapest's Vintage Galéria voiced the art world's collective hope: "We strongly hope for dialogue with civil society, the reconstruction of the institutional system of culture, and the reinforcement of the capacity and resilience of the independent and critical cultural scene."

What Comes Next [Expert Analysis]

Political analysts have tempered expectations. Magyar is himself a centre-right politician and a former Fidesz member, meaning sweeping, rapid transformation is unlikely. Cultural policy shifts will more plausibly unfold gradually—through budget realignment and institutional reform rather than overnight reversal.

For Valkó, the fate of the ideologically burdened Hungarian Academy of Arts will be the litmus test. How the new government redistributes its funding powers could determine whether institutional autonomy becomes reality or remains an aspiration.

Sugár's wish is modest but telling: "I hope that small and large institutions will regain their autonomy, international relations can be rebuilt—and in two words, I expect some vibrancy and bustle."

Hungary's art world is not asking for revolution. After 16 years, the chance to simply breathe again may be enough.
