A Theater Becomes a Water Sanctuary

One of Italy's most storied cultural venues has opened its doors to a design installation for the very first time. GROHE SPA transformed Milan's Piccolo Teatro Studio Melato in the Brera district into 'The Aqua Sanctuary' during Milan Design Week 2026 — a 72-hour architectural intervention placing the rhythmic flow of water at the center of the visitor experience.

Why This Space, Why Now

The Piccolo Teatro Studio Melato is a landmark of Italian contemporary theater, making its first foray into brand design exhibition a symbolic gesture in itself. GROHE SPA, part of the LIXIL group, has long pursued its brand philosophy of 'Wellbeing through Water,' and this installation represents its most ambitious spatial translation of that ethos to date.

Paul Flowers, Chief Design and Brand Identity Officer and Executive Vice President of LIXIL, described the vision: "We envisioned a series of spaces that express the restorative power of water — where mind, body, and space align in perfect harmony through materiality and craftsmanship."

Three Sanctums, Three States of Being

The installation unfolds across three interconnected sanctums, each designed to evoke a distinct sensory and psychological state. Light, shadow, sound, and material interact with flowing water to slow the visitor's perception of time and deepen their engagement with space.

A separate presentation showcased innovative materials, colors, and finishes, offering architects and designers a practical framework for creating cohesive, emotionally resonant interiors. The Atrio Private Collection — including a new vanity line — also made its debut, targeting the luxury residential and hospitality markets.

The Wellness Design Race

Milan Design Week has become the premier stage for brands to test spatial identities. In the post-pandemic era, demand for home-based recovery and ritual has accelerated the growth of the luxury home spa segment. GROHE SPA's choice of the Brera district — the epicenter of the week's design activity — signals a clear ambition to compete at the intersection of architecture, wellness, and brand storytelling.
