Three Cities, One Week

In the third week of April 2026, the global art world witnessed simultaneous landmark events across three continents. London's V&A East Museum opened its doors in Stratford, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) unveiled its long-awaited $700 million new building, and Dublin's National Gallery of Ireland launched a major William Blake retrospective.

V&A East: A New Cultural Anchor for East London

The Victoria and Albert Museum's new outpost, V&A East, opened on 18 April in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford—a cultural complex born from the legacy of the 2012 London Olympics. Greeting visitors at the forecourt is an 18-foot bronze sculpture, A Place Beyond (2026), by British artist Thomas J. Price.

The museum's inaugural exhibition, The Music is Black: A British Story, celebrates the history of Black British music culture. Director Gus Casely-Hayford, who has long championed community-driven programming, positioned V&A East as a counterpoint to the perceived elitism of the South Kensington flagship—a museum that breathes with East London rather than speaking down to it.

The $700 Million Question: LACMA's New Home

Across the Atlantic, LACMA opened the David Geffen Galleries, designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor at a cost exceeding $700 million. Member previews begin 19 April, with public opening in early May.

The building has sparked considerable debate. Critics have questioned its scale, its staggering cost, and whether Zumthor's characteristically austere and introverted architectural language suits the open, sun-drenched spirit of Los Angeles. Industry observers note the tension between the Swiss architect's minimalist sensibility and the city's exuberant cultural identity. LACMA, for its part, hopes the new building will cement its status as the premier art destination on the West Coast.

Blake in Dublin: Romantic Fantasy Revisited

At the National Gallery of Ireland, William Blake: The Age of Romantic Fantasy opened this week, running until 19 July. The centrepiece work is Satan Smiting Job with Sore Boils (c.1826), a tempera painting that distils Blake's ferocious line and visionary colour at their most intense. Co-curator Anne Hodge describes the exhibition as an effort to reframe Blake not merely as an illustrator or poet, but as a total artist who translated Romantic philosophical thought into visual language.

Three Openings, One Question

Though separated by geography and circumstance, all three events converge on a single question: what is a museum for? V&A East proposes decentralisation and community. LACMA tests the limits of architectural ambition. Dublin's Blake retrospective insists on the enduring power of the hand-made and the visionary.
