£10m for Southbank Centre's 75th Anniversary Year

The UK government has awarded £10m to the Southbank Centre in London for urgent infrastructure repairs, coinciding with the venue's 75th anniversary. The funds will address leaking roofs, failing glazing systems, and outdated rigging equipment that have long threatened the complex's operations.

Chief Executive Elaine Bedell welcomed the investment, stating that "great art needs great infrastructure" and that the funding would keep the venue's doors "wide open for the millions of visitors who bring this site to life every year."

Part of a Broader £128m Cultural Rescue Package

The £10m grant comes from the £96m Creative Foundations Fund (CFF), administered by Arts Council England on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The CFF benefits 74 arts and culture venues in total, including Autograph ABP in London (£499,950), the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead (£3.6m), and Firstsite gallery in Colchester (£995,000).

Alongside the CFF, the government announced the £25.5m Museum Estate and Development Fund supporting 28 museums such as Bristol Museums (£3.6m) and Compton Verney (£794,750), and the £6.3m Libraries Improvement Fund for 28 library services. All three funds form the first tranche of the Arts Everywhere Fund, a £1.5bn package announced earlier this year.

A Legacy of Debt and Renovation

The Southbank Centre's financial challenges stretch back decades. A major renovation starting in 2005 expanded the Royal Festival Hall's capacity by 35% but exceeded its £111m budget, ultimately costing £117m. The Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, and Hayward Gallery reopened in 2018 after a two-year refurbishment by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios.

The accumulated debt from these projects has weighed heavily on the Centre's finances. This government injection signals the UK's commitment to treating cultural infrastructure as a public asset deserving sustained state support.
