Shocking defeat in the historic 1000th international match
The Korean men's soccer team lost 0-4 in a friendly match against Ivory Coast held at Milton Keynes Stadium MK in England on the 28th (Korean time). As the game on this day had a symbolic meaning as the 1,000th international match in Korean soccer history, the loss by 4 goals remained an even more painful result.
Director Hong Myung-bo emphasizes harvest in defeat
Coach Hong Myung-bo focused on learning through defeat, saying at the post-game press conference, "Although our shortcomings were exposed when we conceded goals, we also confirmed positive aspects." He analyzed the loss, saying, “On offense we were unable to capitalize on opportunities, and on defense we were lacking in one-on-one duels.”
However, Coach Hong positively evaluated Yang Hyun-jun's participation in the attack, saying, "The players followed through on the transition part they promised."
Willingness to master the three-back tactic
This match was in the nature of a ‘virtual mock test’ targeting South Africa, the opponent in the group stage of the North and Central America World Cup finals. Ivory Coast, ranked 37th in the FIFA rankings, was selected as the optimal sparring partner with Africa's unique physical condition and elasticity.
Coach Hong expressed his determination not to give up on the three-back, which is being considered as the main tactic in the finals. He said, “As the positions of the fullbacks on both sides were lowered, the attack development was not smooth,” and “I believe that small differences can produce big results by improving the areas that did not work well today.”
The national team will move to Vienna, Austria and play the second warm-up match against Austria on the 1st of next month.
