A First Headline Sponsor for the 2026 BAFTA Games Awards
The 2026 BAFTA Games Awards has adopted its first-ever headline sponsor, rebranding as the 'BAFTA Games Awards with Google Play.' While individual categories have carried sponsors before, this marks the first time a single commercial partner has headlined the entire ceremony.
BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip spoke candidly to industry media on the day of the ceremony about the financial realities driving the move. "Award ceremonies of this calibre and quality are not cheap. Production costs have skyrocketed. Simply put, the revenue helps us deliver a beautiful ceremony." This year's show features a live performance of 'Suteki Da Ne' from Final Fantasy X by the Sonaris Ensemble, alongside a set from singer Talia Mar.
Drawing the Line Between Commerce and Editorial Integrity
Millichip was careful to distinguish the BAFTA Games Awards from more commercially oriented rivals. While acknowledging Geoff Keighley's The Game Awards — "everyone has their place," she said — she was firm that commercial gain would never influence what appears on stage or on the ballot.
On the possibility of including trailers or sneak peeks, she left the door open while setting a clear condition. "We absolutely wouldn't rule it out, but it would always be an editorial decision. There would be no commercial gain to us in showing a trailer — that's what we would ensure."
The integrity of the judging process remains BAFTA's central claim. "We are scrutinized by Deloitte across film, games and television. Our members and jurors take the work they do very seriously." That rigour, she argued, is precisely what makes a BAFTA win meaningful. "You can't buy a BAFTA, no matter what you do. It's peer voted, and that's a real honour."
Growing Games in BAFTA's Shadow
Despite more than two decades of running the Games Awards, Millichip acknowledged the ceremony has yet to achieve the same public profile as BAFTA's film and TV counterparts. Of roughly 14,000 BAFTA members, around half are in film, while the games membership stands at 1,700 and growing.
BAFTA is working to expand that base through the long-running Young Game Designers competition and school outreach, including a partnership with mental health charity Place2Be targeting underserved communities. Early-career bursaries have doubled in recent years to help talented individuals afford the equipment or training they need to launch. Mid-career programmes including BAFTA Elevate and BAFTA Breakthrough round out the support, with leadership development flagged as a future priority.
