Chinese Diplomat's Assassination Threat Against Japanese PM Sparks Controversy
Chinese Consul in Osaka Threatens to 'Behead' PM Koike, Chinese Foreign Ministry Defends Remarks

- •The Chinese Consul General in Osaka posted 'beheading' threats against the Japanese Prime Minister, prompting an official protest from the Japanese government.
- •Rather than condemning Xue, China's Foreign Ministry defended him and criticized Japanese media for exaggerated reporting.
- •PM Koike refused to retract her statement and reaffirmed Japan's clear position on Taiwan defense.
Beyond Diplomatic Discourtesy: A Murder Threat
Xue Jian (薛劍), the Chinese Consul General in Osaka, publicly posted threatening remarks stating he would "behead" Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Koike (高市早苗), prompting an official protest from the Japanese government. This incident has transcended mere diplomatic discourtesy, constituting a direct threat to the physical safety of a sitting prime minister and creating new tensions in bilateral relations.
The catalyst was PM Koike's remarks on Taiwan. During a Diet session on the 7th, she reaffirmed her existing position that "a Taiwan contingency would be a Japanese contingency," further stating that "if armed attack occurs, it would likely be recognized as an 'existential threat situation' under security legislation." This suggested the possibility of invoking the Self-Defense Forces' collective self-defense rights, developing former Prime Minister Abe's political warning that "a Taiwan emergency is a Japanese emergency" into concrete defense policy.
Chinese Diplomat's Blatant Threat
The night after PM Koike's statement, on the 8th, Consul General Xue posted on X (formerly Twitter): "Such a filthy head should be cut off without hesitation. Are you prepared?" accompanied by angry emojis. This threat to a sitting prime minister's safety immediately sparked public outrage in Japanese society, and the government filed an official protest with China through diplomatic channels on the 9th.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara (木原稔) characterized Xue's remarks as "extremely inappropriate" and demanded deletion of the related posts. Some public opinion has even called for Xue's expulsion from the country.
China's Foreign Ministry's Shocking Defense
More noteworthy is the Chinese Foreign Ministry's response. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian (林劍), rather than condemning Xue, defended him by claiming he was "responding to erroneous statements interfering in China's internal affairs" and instead criticized Japanese media for "deliberate exaggerated reporting."
Japanese journalist Akio Yaita (矢板明夫) analyzed this as indicating "Xue's threat was not a personal slip but an extension of China's official position." This points to China openly displaying the arrogance and uncontrolled nature of its 'wolf warrior diplomacy.'
PM Koike's Unwavering Stance
Despite the threats, PM Koike refused to retract her statement. In the Diet, she emphasized that her response was justified, stating it "aligns with the government's consistent position and policy direction." This is interpreted as an expression of the Japanese government's intention to take a clearer and more proactive stance on Taiwan Strait issues.
Presidential Office Spokesperson Kuo Ya-hui (郭雅慧) of Taiwan also stated that "the Chinese official's remarks clearly exceeded diplomatic propriety" and expressed commitment to cooperating with Japan and like-minded countries to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and Indo-Pacific region.
Message to South Korea
This incident also offers implications for South Korea's diplomacy toward China and Japan. China's wolf warrior diplomacy escalating to direct threats against an allied nation's prime minister could become a test case for how regional countries respond to Chinese pressure.
Particularly for South Korea, considering the North Korean issue and economic dependence on China, this is a critical time to carefully analyze how Japan's clarification of Taiwan defense will impact the Korean Peninsula security structure. If U.S.-Japan security cooperation extends to Taiwan, South Korea's strategic options may become increasingly limited.
Although Consul General Xue deleted the controversial post as the controversy grew, the Chinese Foreign Ministry's defense has defined the incident not as individual misconduct but as a state-level threat. As backlash from the Japanese government and public continues, there is growing possibility that this incident could accelerate the strengthening of the U.S.-Japan alliance and discussions on Taiwan defense.
