Four generations under one roof, daily life of elderly care
The story of a family with four generations living in the same house, from a 99-year-old mother to a 14-month-old great-granddaughter, comes to the small screen. KBS1's 'Human Theater' will broadcast at 7:50 a.m. on the 30th and highlight the daily lives of a family that practices 'care for the elderly.'
The main character, grandmother Ra Jeong-im, suffered from depression and dementia after her husband passed away. The son, Hyukseong, retired from his job three years ago and chose to stay with his mother. The meaning of family is reflected in the sight of a gray-haired son taking care of his mother, who is about to turn 100 years old.
Why is this story important?
The ‘no-care’ phenomenon is spreading in Korean society due to rapid aging. As the number of people aged 65 or older caring for older parents or spouses increases, discussions on social support systems for care are also becoming more active.
Hyukseong's choice is an expression of personal filial piety, but it also shows the reality of care faced by modern families. His wish is simple. “To protect my mother and take care of her with all my heart when I can.” This simple resolution contains the concerns and dedication of countless families.
The extended family where four generations live together has become an increasingly rare sight in modern society, where nuclear families have progressed. However, this family continues their daily lives, embracing each other across generations. The archetypal value of family community can be discovered in this space where the laughter of a 14-month-old great-granddaughter and the life of a 99-year-old great-grandmother coexist.
