Startled kangaroo, jumps over the fence and escapes into the forest

Kangaroo 'Chesney' escaped from the Sunshine Farm Zoo located in Nesida, Wisconsin, USA, and a three-day chase took place. On March 25th local time, Chesney, startled by something, jumped over a fence and fled into the nearby woods.

Zoo staff immediately reached out to local residents on social media for help. The last sighting was in the direction of Seventh Avenue. Even though a drone pilot was deployed, the search was difficult due to bad weather, and Chesney was found that night, but disappeared from sight again due to the dense forest.

Thermal imaging drone deployment and community solidarity

The search team began operations again early in the morning. Chesney chose a strategy of luring the kangaroo by placing his favorite food and pouch at the last sighting spot.

As the search continued into Friday, local residents rallied in support of the 'celebrity marsupial'. The zoo director responded to media interviews and simultaneously collected information on sightings.

Hope rose that afternoon when Chesney was found near the intersection of 23rd Street and 9th Avenue. The director approached cautiously and got to a distance of about 1 meter, but Chesney quickly ran away toward the nearby river.

Dramatic late-night capture operation

Determined not to miss it any longer, the search team deployed several thermal imaging drones. In the pitch-black darkness, a drone picked up Chesney's heat signature, and an eight-member search team surrounded the kangaroo.

A dramatic moment unfolded. A rescuer lunged at the kangaroo, but Chesney slipped out of his grasp, prolonging the chase. In the end, a rescuer named 'Stacey' took a decisive action and succeeded in securing Chesney safely. Exhausted employees praised Stacey as a “rock star.”

Chesney safely returned to the zoo the next day and was able to rest comfortably in his own bed.
